Does everyone give vitamin drops from 6 months?

It seems to be the prevailing advice from everyone including the NHS. But I've always viewed vitamin supplements for adults with suspicion, so am finding it hard to get used to the idea!

Yes I did but I also take an adult multi vitamin myself.

violetwellies · 20/02/2015 09:23

No, vitamin drops are recommended because they believe that the default diet is shite.
Vitamin drops are probably seen as a good alternative to a living wage.

flipflopsonfifthavenue · 20/02/2015 09:24

I did on occasion but from older than 6mo. Closer to 1yo I think. I'm doing it again if I remember now that he's 2.6yo.

flipflopsonfifthavenue · 20/02/2015 09:26

You can't force your body to absorb vitamins so if your body doesn't need them I think they just pass through you

violetwellies · 20/02/2015 09:27

Actually I can feel a rant coming on. It will probably include the government defence of processed food and a value added industry, poor school meals, veg washed and plastics packaged for supermarkets, unfeasibly long working hours, inferior food available in child care facilities and and and

slightlyworriednc · 20/02/2015 09:31

No. This is a very new idea. My youngest is 4 and I certainly wasn't told to do this.
Vitamins are not necessary if your diet is healthy. I do actually use vitamins sometimes, for myself and the kids, but I hate hate hate the idea of this becoming 'the done thing'. It's personal choice.

Heels99 · 20/02/2015 09:33

There is no vitamins in breast milk but there is in formula so its actually while they are breast fed they need the vitamins after they start eating food they should get enough vitamins from that. My babies were prescribed vitamin drops for the first year by paediatrician owing to the breast milk issue but I stopped giving them when switched to formula.

TarkaTheOtter · 20/02/2015 09:33

I attempt to for the vit d but I found neither was keen until they were old enough to have the chewy ones.

westcountrywoman · 20/02/2015 09:36

Yes (I breastfed). Not necessary if FF as they add it to formula.

WhyOWhyWouldYou · 20/02/2015 09:42

Its not diet related really its mostly for the vit D which you can't get enough of from diet or winter sun in the uk.

PurpleStripedSock · 20/02/2015 09:42

I felt bullied into the vitamin drops by the HW. I'm a vitamin skeptic too and believe that food provides nutrients etc. Having said that, it was a long dark winter when she was weaning so I dutifully fed her the NHS freebie vitamin drops on a spoon each morning before breakfast.

5madthings · 20/02/2015 09:43

"there are no vitamins in breast milk" what rot! Of course there, are!

There can be an issue with vitamin d, mainly for premature infants who didn't build up supplies before birth buy most babies have enough. Vitamin d deficiency can be an issue due to lack of sunlight etc but most babies are fine.

meglet · 20/02/2015 09:44

yes, but I've taken vitamins since I was a kid too.

ch1134 · 20/02/2015 09:50

Yes.
I was told that iron reserves in mum and baby drop off around 6 months, and as baby is on a lot of milk it's important to raise iron levels in breastfed babies.

Superworm · 20/02/2015 09:51

I was going to second madthings

Breastmilk is packed full of natural vitamins that the body uses easily. Vitamins supplements are recommended due to vitamin D not passing through breastmilk very well. It is new research and it is sketchy.

I would definitely take vitamin D as a breastfeeding mother though. I became deficient in vit D after breastfeeding for a long time.

BMO · 20/02/2015 09:52

Yes definitely, even with an ideal diet it is very difficult to get enough vitamin D. Baby and 4 year old both take them.

BMO · 20/02/2015 09:53

I think most people are vitamin D deficient in the UK and long term it has been linked to MS.

flipflopsonfifthavenue · 20/02/2015 10:16

I think most of Northern Europe is vit d deficient in the winter.

darksideofbuttonmoon · 20/02/2015 10:32

Yes, for the vitamin D. Also dd loves the taste, goes mental as soon as she sees the bottle, and I think would be most put out if I stopped!

squizita · 20/02/2015 10:33

As Superworm says mum can end up deficient if she doesn't take care too!

squizita · 20/02/2015 10:35

There are fortified foods (ready brek etc) that some of my bf friends with babies on solids give (my lo is ebf now). But make sure they aren't full of sugar of course.

MrsMillions · 20/02/2015 10:37

We have vit D drops. Always struggled to drop into mouth so ended up putting them on Weetabix, DD is guaranteed to finish that so know she'll get the full dose. Worked fine when I was still on mat leave but now I'm working she has breakfast at nursery - so tends to only get her vitamins on my days off. Nursery very good at getting them outside though.
