When to give tap water instead of cooled boiled?

We've started weaning our 6 month old with finger food and want to give some water to have in a sippy cup.

He has never had water before, only breast milk. The NHS choices website says you don't need to boil and cool water after 6 months, it can be just straight from the tap. I know I should trust this, but I know a lot of people with older babies still giving cooled boiled water! So I thought I'd ask when others made the switch from boiled to tap?

Now, or alternatively wait until they are 18 years old to be on the safe side Grin. I remember having the same dilemma, maybe wait for a couple of months and you may feel better about it?

6months is fine. A lot of people get confused and think its 1yr because of the need to boil water for formula.

I've only ever given my DD tap water...?

DS1 is 6 months this weekend and has been taking water in a sippy cup (well trying to...) for a couple of weeks. I have to admit to using tap water on a couple if occasions when I've forgotten to put boiled water in the fridge but think I'll just give up the boiling when he's 'officially' 6 months.

We started weaning at 6 months, went straight to tap water.

Same here. Started weaning at 6 months and also offered tap water.

PenguinsandtheTantrumofDoom · 19/02/2015 20:27

There is water in food. No point boiling the stuff in a cup once you are weaning Smile

VikingLady · 19/02/2015 20:38

6m. They're putting everything in their mouths at that stage, so there's no point sterilising their water!

6 months and 2 weeks. For the 2 weeks I didn't dare. And I doused his plate/cup/spoons etc in boiling water after washing them upBlush Blush! Stopped when I turned around and he had a leaf off the buggy wheel in his mouth! He's my pfb, can you tell??Blush

Maybe filter it if it makes you feel better? Tap water is fine though

I never thought once about giving anything other than tap water. The again not having formula fed it wasn't remotely on my radar.

DS1 was licking the handrails on the underground by then so a bit of tap water wasn't going to hurt him
