Playgroup drop out

I took DS (11 weeks) to his first ever baby group thigy and have already emailed the oragnisers to say I wouldn't be coming back (it was an orgnaised group thing that you were meant to commit to for 30 weeks).

It was 2.5 hours so a massive chunk of the day, and I have a really low tolerance for group singalong type activities anyway (I blame going to a religious schoolf or 13 years ... my appetite for sitting in a circle singing songs has been well and truly exhausted.)

I never went to ante-natal classes (mainly because I couldn't be bothered and again the group activity antipathy) so this was the first baby group thing I'd dne and it was as bad as I had feared it would be.

We had to sit in a circle and there was a Thought For The Day ("I hope I am always my child's favourite toy") which I totally don't agree with but which elicited worthy responses from the group, we had to make name cards on coloured cards & decorate them with the stuff provided (ber in midn this is a baby group so the decorating wasn't an activity our kids could join in on - it basically meant 15 30-something women all got busy cutting and pasting while the babies lay on the mats. Then we were told about the Importance Of Reading to Your Child, which I'm pretty sure all the highly competitive 30 somethig women from this affluent area were aware of, nd the faciitator read us Hairy McClairy. Again, the babies couldn't see the book (as it was tny & she was sitting in the middle of the large circle)... so it was basically a group of grown women being read a story.

I know that there are some things I will have to suck up & get involved in now I have kids but am I unreasonable to have found the whole thing massively annoying & to have dropped out? And will DS be irrevocably damaged if I boycott all such future activities in favour of the playground/catching him with friends' kids & just occasionally take him to Wriggle & RHyme at the library?

they sound nuts. 2+ hours is way too long. and as for making adults stick and listen to stories Hmm .

stick to library sessions and look for some chilled out baby and toddler groups that you can drop in and out of.

WhyNotSmile · 12/02/2015 23:36

You are being totally unreasonable - we all want you to go back and report on the next 29 weeks' worth of nutty activities!

Seriously, that sounds awful - and both you and DS will be fine without it.

sosix · 12/02/2015 23:40

Omg i think you were thrown in at the deep end. Not any all groups are like that. Whatever works for you and dc.

I quite like hairy mclary. Blush

seaoflove · 12/02/2015 23:52

That is the weirdest sounding group. I have never heard of anything like it in my life!

Who runs it? Do you live it a particularly poncey area? Grin

sosix · 12/02/2015 23:54

Did you pay to be read a story/do sticking attend?

Pico2 · 13/02/2015 00:09

Are you sure that wasn't a cult? You didn't pay for the 30 weeks up front did you?

I hope that I am not always my baby's favourite toy. Playing is just a bit too dull and I wouldn't have time to MN.

Didactylos · 13/02/2015 00:17

why are there never these groups near me!
I would love a commitment of 30 weeks being subversive at a bonkers baby class. It would give me focus.....

TheRealMaryMillington · 13/02/2015 00:26

Blimey that sounds horrific
And very brain-washy
Who was organising it?

Keep looking - there are playgroups out there which have booze-fuelled nights out for the parents AND which serve hot drinks and toast. Life-savers.

Gennz · 13/02/2015 07:48

Yes you're meant to pay up front but luckily I hadn't before I escaped! I'm in NZ - it was the equivalent of about 75 quid (for the whole 30 weeks). (I'm told this isn't normal for NZ either). I live in an ok area but this was in a super flash area about 10 minutes drive away (I only went there because 2 friends were going too! I'm not trying to get DS in with a Better Class of Baby.)

Today I met a few friends with toddlers at the beach - a much better use of 2 hours!

Not the point of the thread at all, but I do love Arsenic's description of a group as 'emetic', and will be storing it up for future use.

OP - baby group (of any kind) or day at the beach = no competition. Enjoy your summer.

Free drop in groups are your friend here. To me my 6 month old DS morning nap is very important (sets his mood for the day!) so I'm not going to sign up for anything that I have to be at. Small church hall play groups that cost a couple of pounds, free library Rhymetimes and Sure Start centres which you can go to if you want to that day. These things can be nice to chat to some mums and tend to be more based on play and rhymes etc which will actually benefit the baby! And anything over an hour will just be stressful as babies will need to sleep. Some weeks I go to a few groups, some weeks none. But at 11 weeks there is no hurry, DS is 6 months and we didn't go to much until he was about 4 months old.

Redling · 13/02/2015 10:03

Ah I see NZ so Sure Start not a thing! But anything low key and cheap or free!

Bananice · 13/02/2015 10:11

Ah, Gennz, I'm guessing you signed up to SPACE? Fellow kiwi here... I dropped out of that with DC1 and so far (at 2.2) he doesn't seem harmed... Have kept the schedule blissfully free for DC2!

meglet · 13/02/2015 10:14

I've just googled their website. It does look a tad wanky Grin .

mrsmugoo · 13/02/2015 11:06

Mine is 11 months and we haven't started any of that guff either - I'm not in the least bit interested. Maybe when he's older and can interact with other children and actually get the benefit.

11 weeks is basically newborn - they have LITERALLY NO IDEA where they are!!
