Calpol and night terrors??

My dd ( 13 months) has recently been suffering from what I presume are night terrors. She's goes in her cot bedtime no problem but most nights lately she's been waking a few hours later screaming!! Her eyes are still shut and sometimes she's sitting up. The minute I pick her up she calms down and stops crying but unfortunately won't go back in her cot, we have had to bring her in with us And then place her back in a bit later on.

Now recently because she's been teething and then she had a bad cold I've been giving her a dose of calpol before bed. Last two nights I haven't bothered and we have had the best nights sleep in a while. No more screaming or night terrors. I'm just wondering if it could be connected to calpol?? Anyone else had this issue???

DS2 had them until he was about 8. Regular as clockwork every night at the same times.
The best treatment which I only discovered after years and years was to wake him shortly before he was due to "go off".

I didn't notice any connection with calpol.

DD1 suffered night terrors, I never saw any connection with Calpol. My DD didn't stop screaming when I picked her up either - she was kind of 'out of reach' if you know what I mean? She'd be screaming, I would hold her and comfort her, she would continue to scream, and scream, and scream......and then all by herself she would suddenly go quiet and be fast asleep.

I think my DD has them like sylvanian she doesn't stop when I pick her up or do anything it's like she is still asleep but screaming and thrashing about. Eventually she just wakes up properly has a little chat I give her a cuddle she then rolls over and goes to sleep.
Some nights though she just wakes up and cries a bit!
Sounds like something has disturbed your DD teeth or stuffy nose always make for a disturbed night in our house

Our dd reacted with night terrors everytime she had calpol before bed. Seemed like she had woken up but not actually awake. Eyes closed, screaming but nothing would settle her. This happened until she was about 18months, we had to give her neurofen instead. One day we tried it and she was fine!!

I noticed once before but thought it was just a coincidence. I'm glad someone else has experienced this. Last night was a great night too without calpol. She's fine once picked up but absolutely terrified to go back into her cot. So much so my dh kept saying he wanted the cot back in out room. I was adamant she stays in her own room otherwise we would never get her in her her room. I will try nurofen once the nxt teething episode starts

My grandson has behaviour and sleep problems but when he has had Calpol he tends to have these night terrors onl just made the connection because one of my other grandsons has also had night terrors and my son looked into it it and found out about it so I'm just wondering what other pain relief u can give them besides Nurofen bu the way my grandsons are 2 @3

Not exactly the same but DH hallucinates and has bad nightmares if he has paracetamol before bed, maybe some people react to it or it disturbs the sleep pattern?

butterfly86 · 29/03/2015 20:14

My dd (9 months) has what I presume are night terrors can hear her dreaming over the monitor then the screaming starts she's still asleep but it can take a while to settle her and it's definitely worse after calpol I can guarantee it will happen if she's had it before bed.

There isn't much research into it that I could find but there are some reactions to paracetamol, my mom used to think the night terrors were Calpol related but it is paracetamol in general and 27 years later I still experience them so I avoid. They also get worse if you mix them with other painkillers truly terrifying. thought this would be helpful. My sister also experienced them when she had tonsillitis constantly and needed painkillers

I’m sure the OP is glad you’ve resurrected this thread which is over 7 years old to offer advice. As her child is now 8 years old she’s probably finished teething.

LadyStarEyes · 29/05/2024 01:18

BigBrother2022 thank you - I’m currently awake ‘googling’ night terrors and side effects… as my LG has just had a tonsillectomy but knowing your sister went through similar has reassured me that im not loosing my mind
