Anyone have book recommendations for a 5 yr old able reader?

DS1 is in Y1 and at Parent's evening last night his teacher said that fairly soon he will reach a point where his ability and vocabulary will be ahead of his understanding, and that many books which he could technically read will have themes which are too grown up.

He is currently working his way through the Oxford Reading Tree TreeTops stage 11, which he can read fairly competently but often finds fairly boring.

As his school is an infants school, I get the impression they don't have many levels above the one he's currently on.

Out of school we read chapter books together - he's a fan of Jeremy Strong, but I'm looking for something he could read by himself.

Spydogs books are good (about a dog which is a spy, surprisingly enough!). They shouldn't be too hard to understand.

Thanks, I'll have a look at those.

Our local library seems to have the complete collection of Horrid Henry, which he doesn't like, and not much else!
