A friend with an 11 week old revealed that shes always concerner about uhow quickly she picks her baby up and about any head wobble incase she causes shaken baby syndrome.

Its lead me to think about how i handle my 4 week old. Shes pretty strong and can hold her head to a certain degree already. Dont get me wrong im supporting her neck most of the time but sometimes, if i pick her up from a funny angle, it'll loll about a bit, or flop from side to side. Another example is during burping when she'll try to hold her head up, wobble then headbutt me.

Is my friend being paranoid or am i being too rough? I feel awful now!

Well, her head shouldn't be lolling or wobbling about. You should support it when you pick her up.

When you wind her are you not supporting her head?

Katekoom · 07/02/2015 03:15

I do support it yes but she seems to push against that support.

I'll have to be more careful.

Babies are tough little buggers Kate don't you worry. Her head isn't going to fall off and you won't damage her.
Have fun and lots of love xx

Yes sorry I don't think you should pick her up from a funny angle if you can't support her head properly to avoid it flopping about.
Put her on your shoulder to wind her?
It's not going to cause shaken baby syndrome mind you - but it's not very comfortable for them and could hurt.

Well whether you were or werent being too careless with her, you can make a conscious effort now not too. Youve noticed the lolling so just make sure that you are properly supporting her everytime you lift her.

I think the friend is being too scared: it won't cause shaken baby syndrome.

But it will be uncomfortable so do try to hold the head/neck. Smile
