MMR - 16 months

Hi,

My 16 month old is due to have his second MMR this afternoon.

Nowhere on the NHS website do I see he is due this, but the surgery confirmed it. If he has it today, will he still need a booster at 3/4 years? What's the motivation for them to do this now? Any risks?

I'll ask the nurse this afternoon, but my experience is they are not always knowledgeable. I also don't want to waste everyone's time by going to the appointment and then refusing the vaccine. Is there a window that he can have the vaccine? If he doesn't have it today, I won't be able to take him for another two weeks.

are you in a place that has a high incidence of measles? They can be given a month apart, if required, in an outbreak area.

DD has just had hers at 12 months (well 14 months as she was ill, then it was Christmas and then we couldn't get an appointment!) and we were told she didn't need to go back for any more immunisations until she was 3-4. I would ask the GP to clarify whether it is something particular to your area.

In case anyone else wonders, the nurse said many London boroughs do the second dose at 16 months rather than 3/4 years.
