5 month old + new cot = bad!

DS is 5 months (and a very tiny 5 months, only 14lbs) up until now he's been in a crib but last night was the first night he has been in his cot. Disaster Confused
He woke me up every hour and a half by turning in his sleep and whacking his head on the bars, can I stop him doing this?

On top of this, he can't sleep with out holding onto a blanket or a muslin but has started to pull them up over his face, panics and starts crying so combined with the head bashing, I'm never going to sleep again

I'm basically repositioning him after the head whack, giving him a dummy and muslin to go back off to sleep, staying awake until he falls asleep, removing the muslin from his teeny hands, going back to bed and then waiting 90 mins for the cycle to start again.
He has a cot bumper at the top of the cot, could I remove said bumper and tie it down the side that he turns (it's always the same way) to pad the side out a bit. If I tie it on super tight, he won't get it off, I was yanking it before I put him in the cot and it wasn't budging, I know he won't be able to move it.

Anyone have any ideas?
sorry if this is slightly rambly, I'm v tired!

Hi, I've got air wraps on the side of my son's cot - Google them! I got them from John Lewis and they just Velcro on the sides of the cot and pad them out - seem to work for us!

Perfect! Thank you Grin

I'll second that. My air wraps are great and stop his wriggly legs getting through the bars.

My friend swears by a grobag then a light blanket/sheet tucked into the mattress over the top to prevent night time cot wandering.
I've also heard placing a teddy on the baby's legs can stop them jerking them around, although obviously teddies in bed is not recommended.
We have breathable bumpers on the sides which are good for cushioning the bumps.
can't help with the muslin trauma though - mine also loves his muzzy/dummy combo but he likes it draped over his face to sleep... little oddball. could you maybe tie it to the cot bars by his hands so he can't flip it up?

I will definitely second a grobag. It is a little while since my dcs were little but it worked a treat for me. I ended up buying a second and bigger one as they get older/bigger

Cupcakes123 · 28/01/2015 07:55

He's in a gro bag, we used to wedge a cellular around him and if he moved the blanket went with him too iyswim so wasn't a problem but now he pulls everything onto his little fat face and understandably freaks out when he can't move it.
Will try the tying onto the bar thing, I hadn't thought of that! That might help, he likes it touching his face but not covering but hasn't quite worked out how to do that yet!
I might get the big cellular out and try tucking round him and then under the mattress so he really gets wedged in and can't do his little nighttime aerobics and hopefully less head whacking

How about putting a safety pin into the muslin (a gd strong one) and then hooking the pin through a very strong string loop tied to the bar (double knotted and everything). Then you could position the muslin so he can have it in his hand, as far as his mouth etc but can't reach as far as covering his face...

Re the cot feeling too big when my baby was a newborn we got a towel, rolled it up like a sausage and stuck it under the sheet in a horseshoe shape around the top half of his body. We took it out about a month ago (he's nearly 4 months). Not sure if it would be safe with a roller though...

Cupcakes123 · 28/01/2015 13:15

That's a good idea too, he's not rolling yet so might be able to get away with that for a little bit until he gets used to the cot.

If only he understood me saying "stop twisting round in bed and you won't bang your head you wally" Smile

We have a 'sleepyhead' - works wonders! Available from John Lewis. Helps baby sleep and stops cot wandering....

Cupcakes123 · 28/01/2015 19:54

He is in the cot. Bumper temporarily along the side he bangs into (very well secured, he will not get it off incase the bumper police are about Confused), muslin tied onto the bars and cellular blanket wedged right round him.

I am determined to sleep tonight!! He's been in there since 6.30 and is where I left him with no aerobics so fingers crossed Smile

I second the sleepyhead ! What a god send!

LastOneDancing · 29/01/2015 10:16

Cupcakes how did the night go?

CarrotPuff · 29/01/2015 11:51

My DS did that too. Except he went into a cot when he was 6.5 months (he was tiny too). He very quickly learned how to roll over once got the space, and got used to moving about the cot without bashing his head. He'll get used to it too, don't worry. It looks/sounds worse than it is.
