breastfeeding boob pain

My milk came in maybe 10-12 days ago and I got the typical, painful, solid boobs but I still seem to be getting them, solid and itchy, at certain times of day.

When breastfeeding is that always the case? Or do they eventually settle down?

And do they always leak so much?

I think itching is v normal, mine certainly did, especially at the sides! They leaked loads too, if I was feeding the other side would leak lots but it soon settled down

They will settle down once your feeding patter becomes established, don't worry! Leaking should also settle down as you will produce as and when you need rather than just all the time but IIRC I used breastpads for a good 4 months or more, my problem was that when feeding on one side, the other side would leak! That was a pain! Or, useful for expressing as that was the only time I could do that.

Good luck and well done!

pattern, rather.

FWIW it's one of the most wonderful things and it's something I really miss, I found it incredibly distressing to stop! I'm quite glad though I have a photo of my bfing 2 of my dcs Blush

I had the same but it settled down at about 6 weeks and the leaking started to become less. Your baby is still placing their order for how much milk they need but once your body gets used to the amount required things should settle down. The Kellymom website has lots of useful info on all aspects of breastfeeding.

generally it takes 6 weeks to establish breastfeeding when you're doing it for the first time. that weird feeling goes away, as does the leaking at night thing where you wake up soaking.

Blueblueblueblue · 27/01/2015 22:45

It settles down, don't worry.

Feeding in the first six weeks bears little resemblance to feeding later on. It gets easier I promise!!

Thank you all.
Knowing that element improves makes me all the more keen to cracking on with it. I gave myself a two week deadline to decide whether I'd continue with it (because I was finding it so hard), I'm now on day 18 and feeling quite proud Smile

Well, proud but exhausted!

to echo everyone else, it will pass and (in my experience) feeding just gets easier with the occasional bump. And once you feel you have truly mastered it, it's time to start weaning Wink

Well done on getting this far, it's not easy at the start but the rewards do come x
