Newbie's Newborn Reusable Nappy Plan - Thoughts?

My first baby is due in May and I'm very keen to use reusable nappies as much and as soon as I can. I'm planning to use disposables for the first week(s) then I've got a mix of things to use:
12 bambino mios / 3 xs & 3 s mio wraps - I'll use one of the folds with nappi nippa for these instead of pad folding (I know lots of people aren't keen on these but they were an irresistible preloved bargain!)
10 bamboo 50cm terries
10 cotton 60cm terries
4 Nature Babies classic wraps in small
20 Fleece liners plus some flushable ones

Questions

  • Is this enough to be able to wash every other day with a NB?
  • How long will this do baby for - approx weight / age?
  • Any other advice / recommendations / tips for a newbie?

Many thanks

Hello

I can't believe it's four weeks and no one replied to your post! Sorry!

Hopefully you'll see this

I would say more than enough to wash every other day. I would say that you are taking a tough road.

We used cloth from 22hrs old but we use shaped nappies and wraps!

There's a lot of folding with what your suggesting!

I think you'd get good mileage out of the nappies and terries would be great for boosting externally at night later. Same with bambino mio prefolds - we have a few still which we use to boost and for all sorts.

Great that you want to do this. I also planned to use disposables for a week but hated them and only used them away from home as bought so many I had to use up. Haven't used a sposie since Oct now!

Thanks for your reply and message, ClearlyMoo - I cross posted this in parenting after a couple of weeks and got a few more replies there!

After having seen and smelled a disposable now I'm hoping to avoid using them as much as possible!

Yeah, it probably is a lot of folding - most of my baby prep seems to be origami (nappies, sling, swaddling)! I've had a practice of a few folds to get comfortable with them. It helps that DH is totally on board. He even made a comment about looking forward to sitting in front of the telly and getting all our terries folded up ready for the week ahead! We don't have a tumble drier and live in a very wet part of the world so the terries will hopefully dry pretty quickly on a drying rail. We've also since bought a few all-in-ones to use when out and about or when we can't be bothered with terries so that should make things a bit easier and more convenient.

Can't wait till baby's bum (and the rest of him!) gets here.

terry squares are great. i have a variety of nappies but have used squares on newborn to toddler.

i find sorting prefolded useful. Just sit and fold while watching tv, put liner in etc.

oops clearly your dh is one step ahead of me.

Cheap pockets might be better than all in ones for when you want speed. Some good ones on ebay. Just buy the outers without inserts and use your terries to stuff. equally quick to dry.

If you use disposables for the first few weeks/nights/holidays, try some eco ones - far less chemically and stinky, and lower environmental impact. Nature Baby are available in Boots, supermarkets etc, but my favorites were Bambo from Naturebotts and Moltex, also from NatureBotts - both also on Amazon. They are £££ but very absorbent.

yellow bloom is the eBay seller i was thinking of.

You have pretty much the same plan as me a friend gave me a huge sack of unused prefold nappies and Bambio Mio wraps.

I have around 24 newborn prefold sizes and 6 wraps.
And about 30+ larger prefolds and another 6 larger wraps.
4 fleece liners
4 bamboo liners.
I could probably do with more liners.

For shaped nappies I have about 16 sm Motherease too that I bought before I was given the pre-folds.

I would say from previous experience Bambio Mio aren't the greatest wraps but they do a good enough job. I really rate the Motherease wraps.

I've been washing the prefolds recently we don't keep a particularly warm house but they seem to dry within a few hours, much faster than shaped nappies.

Are you planning to use cloth wipes?

I would say on average with a newborn expect to go through 10 nappies a day.
It's hard to say how long they will last for beasue it really depends on the size of the baby and the prefolds, usually at least the first 2-3 months.

For later on I really rate 2 part nappy systems of shaped cloth nappy and wrap with boosters. They dry much faster and often fit well and IMO smell less than the all in ones.

Cloth wipes is a good call. We Love cheeky wipes! Haven't users disposable wipe since we bought them back in the Autumn. Well worth the investment. Yes people say you can just buy flannels but the cheeky wipes boxes and bags system so well designed.

LittleBairn · 22/02/2015 23:00

Clearlymoo I've got a set of cheeky wipes in the box, do you think one set us enough?

ClearlyMoo · 23/02/2015 00:22

Little Bairn for nappy wipes yes - we have 25-35 of these and make up 12-14 wipes at a time and wash with nappies every other day.

We use cheeky wipes coloured weaning wipes too and I'd say we get through these quicker and need more (we do baby led weaning), and so have around 50-60 of these making up 20-30 every other day.

LittleBairn · 23/02/2015 14:34

Thank you I will buy another set of these and note to buy some more at weaning stage.

kittiker · 23/02/2015 19:07

Thanks for all the helpful advice here. YY to the cloth wipes - we're using flannels though as the Cheeky Wipes were a bit pricey for us.
