What's your toddler's memory like?

We were looking through some photos together today.

There was a picture of dd and I together at the races last September/October time. You couldn't seen any horses or the racetrack but when she saw the photo she pointed and said "horses!".

Yesterday we walked past somewhere we haven't been for a while. Last time we were there we met someone she knows well. When she saw the building she said the persons name, as in "oh we saw X here!". This happened at the beginning of December.

Is this unusual? I was really surprised!

Dd is 2.2

Its amazing isn't it! Dd1 is like this too. Makes you realise how much adults memory degenerates

My 2 year old is the same! She reminds me of things from a long time ago that I'd completely forgotten - tiny details too. It's usually if we're in the vicinity of the previous event. I think it's a toddler thing ..

It actually makes me glad I'm not with her dad any more. You think they don't pick up on things or remember stuff but they're little sponges! I'd hate to think she remembers the stress of the separation. It was when she was very little.

Astonishing. All children amaze me with their memories. I think it's just such a tiny person who struggles to put wellies on the right feet and the whole spoon of yoghurt in their mouths, displaying accurate recall. It seems bizarre. But long term memory is infinite, none of us technically forgets anything. Even people with an average recall retain a mind boggling amount of information. Toddlers only have to recall within months too so the neural pathways to their memories are fresh. Like when you smell something and suddenly recall a holiday fom 20yrs ago. Toddlers must experience that quite strongly given that all experiences are relatively recent and in their first two years in particular they are learning and remembering at an accelerated rate. Human memory is fascinating.

Does this ability to recall develop slowly? I presumed when she was a baby up to (well now really) recently that everything she experienced came and went a bit.

I don't expect a 1 year old to remember being 3 months old, for instance. It must be something that comes slowly isn't it?
