Be honest - how much tv does your toddler actually watch?

Ours has crept up during the winter - 1.5 in the morning and 1 hour in the evening Blush

Mine are 4&2. Probably 20-30 mins in the evening (usually Octonaughts or Ben & Holly on Apple TV). Weekends- usually a Disney film both days, so I guess that's closer to 2 hrs. If it's a crappy weather weekend, it might be 2 films.

Half an hour to an hour every second or third day i.e. when I just cannot find energy for her anymore. We don't have a tv so it's always Peppa or Charlie and Lola on the iPad. I like it that way - out of sight, out of mind!

We don't have a TV. Maybe if we did she'd watch it. (DD is 20 months). Occasionally I will try to get her to watch a video on the phone or iPad but everything has a bloody touch screen and she touches it and it goes away.

Baby Jake on YouTube will hold her attention for awhile. Or puppy videos. But she really doesn't watch much. Every few days I'll try to get her to sit still and watch for 10 or 15 minutes.

She does just like to play with my phone though...scrolling through the pictures is especially a favorite. And I have a Fisher Price animals app that she likes. So it's not like we don't do screen time at all.

DS is seven and watches something most days, whether it's Netflix on my phone or a DVD on the portable player.

Ds is 2.3 and watches a fair bit more since dropping his nap. On days with me ( I work 3 days per week) he probably watches 30 mins in the morning whilst I get us ready to go out then an hour to an hour and a half later in the afternoon. If we've been out during the day doing activities I don't get too worried about it. At weekends he watches less unless we all watch a film together.

dietcokeisgreat · 23/01/2015 20:17

Anywhere 0-60mins per day. Variable - i pit on tv if ds is grumpy and tired or it is only me at home and i need yto cook.

lomega · 23/01/2015 20:49

as a family we love curling up with a good disney film. so probably 2hrs a day of tv. I don't see a problem with that because we do lots of other things as a family like swimming, play areas, walks, seeing family, eating out etc...

I don't like it when i see babies and toddlers strapped into buggies or high chairs and pointed at tvs continuously whilst being ignored - for 5 mins while mum goes to the loo is fine but not consecutively :(

Mine are 4 and 2.

They usually watch Mike the Knight in the morning while I frantically clear up and get them dressed (DS is at school nursery).

Sometimes they watch 20 minutes or so after lunch, sometimes they don't.

Then they watch TV after dinner, so about 30 minutes to an hour depending on when they've eaten.

At weekends they often watch up to an hour in the morning and sometimes more in the early evening as well.

They used to only watch CBeebies and Peppa Pig but now also like Wallace and Gromit, The Gruffalo and Room on the Broom.

It goes up massively if one of them is ill. DS would happily sit on the sofa watching TV all morning if I let him.

An hour at lunchtime on the days I work mornings, while I have my lunch and sort myself out. Try to avoid it in the evenings cos it messes up her going to sleep.

More at weekend, and we'll watch stuff like Strictly as well.

She prefers games on the iPad arm, her current favourite is the furchester hotel game on the cbeebies app. Drives me crazy.

My three year old watches about 30inutes a day but sometimes does just want to play and is not interested, she actually insists it goes off, which is not always helpful if I'm cooking as they are more likely to bicker or she makes mischief when on her own- spreads glitter everywhere, writes on her clothes and the table, jumps off furniture to demonstrate gymnastics etc. not all the time but she's not a conformist!

I have a 7.5 year old who likes to watch Horrible Histories but not much else, so most days watches nothing but he does play computer games for 40 minutes a day.

Both of them walk at least 2 miles home from school most days and when we get in I get straight on with cooking and they don't ask for the tv on, they automatically start playing or getting into mischief together- they are really good at that! When we drive home they are a lot more lethargic and ask for the tv to go on- I think the exercise makes them want to do more, hence they play!

I hate TV for young children. However mine watch a lot because otherwise I can't get ready for work.

We've slipped into bad habits over winter - will clamp down once I've given up my stressful job and don't have to rush about so much!

teacher54321 · 24/01/2015 13:33

On nursery days hardly any-maybe 1/2 hour in total. On our days off maybe an hour in bed in the morning snuggled up watching YouTube videos or iplayer (postman pat usually!) and then anything up to three hours later on in the day depending on what we're doing. We'll quite often watch a film (currently watching frozen) and we love the despicable me ones.
