First shoes-how many pairs?

Hi all,

DS will be shortly getting his first pair of shoes. I can't wait to take him to the park so he can toddle about outside...do I need another pair of robust shoes or do you use the same pair for all activities? Are wellies suitable when they first start walking?

Many thanks

We just got one pair of fairly robust shoes. They're expensive! To be honest she doesn't really wear them at home, just when we're out and about. I've bought her some wellies too but she struggles to walk in them for long at the moment as they're heavy and cumbersome.

One pair of properly fitted shoes and pair of wellies is fine.

Same in the summer, plus 'off-the-shelf' sandals.

DD has only just started having a second pair (not counting wellies) at three, as she has black leather for preschool and a more colourful pair for the weekends. Before this she had one pair per foot size. Wellies she has had since about 2 (maybe a little before two). A first walker probably dpesnt need wellies, and they will probably slip off loads.

DS has only ever had one pair of shoes for everything. I buy one really good quality pair and that's his lot! He does also have wellies but I don't think he had them until 18 months or so and even then they were tricky for him to walk in.

One pair. Remember your child won't really be walking that much at first and they will grow out of them quickly!! I personally wouldn't get wellies for a new walker, I think they are very hard to walk in.

When DC started walking [9 months] we had 1 pair which we wore when in the pram to keep feet warm and then when walking/playing outside, going to groups, took them off at home. However this was in the summer, a couple of months on [and in the next size up!] we now have wellies, boots and shoes.

Thanks so much you lovely lot! Sorted-will buy the one pair for now, forgot he won't really wear them at home. At £30+ per pair, it pleases me to leave it at that! We'll do wellies in the autumn x

You probably wouldn't be able to get wellies in very small sizes anyway, I had difficulty getting small enough ones for a 2 year old!

1 pair is fine. We have wellies [size 4 - fine with thick socks] for now as we are often out and about on muddy walks and its very cute watching a 11 month old try to puddle jump Grin

One pair of decent shoes. Mine only got wellies about 2/3 months after first shoes as they need to be really good on their feet for wellies. Mine are 2.3 now and still only gave one pair of shoes, wellies and slippers.
