I know this might be the most stupid thing in the world but i'm worried that my DS (4 month) is sleeping too much.
He sleeps all through night from approx 7 - 7.30 to 5 has bottle goes back down til 8.30 then cannot be awake for more that an hour and half without wanting to sleep again.

He is only awake for about 7 hrs a day???

am i being silly or should i get him checked out?

It is completley fine, please relax and enjoy it and never ever mention that in real life to anyone with a baby of the same age or you might get strangled !. My DS was the same. He seemed to use the time sleeping to grow a lot !

That is unless your instinct is there's something not quite right. When he's awake is he alert etc ?

gem1984 · 17/10/2006 21:08

yes he is very alert likes to smile and laugh play with toys and especially EAT. i just always thought that babies didnt sleep so well and its just weird that mine seems to do nothing but sleep!!!

I found MN when DS was a fairly similar age as I spent much more time sitting round watching a sleeping baby than I anticipated ! He is just over 3 now, sleeps approx 12 hours at night but not during the day anymore and there are times when I really miss the day time sleeps. Oh, he was pretty big on the eating bit at that age as well, though won't touch food in that really annoying toddler way at the moment.

gem1984 · 17/10/2006 21:15

another thing is when he goes to bed at night he is quite happy in his cot but during the day i have to cuddle him to sleep (tried cc but desperately could not do it)then if i put him down he wakes and cries and i have to have hold of him to keep him asleep.... this seems more of a nightmare than if he didnt sleep coz i have things i need to do.
i need to try and get him out of this as i go back to work next month and childminder wont keep hold of him all time...

CAn you try putting him down in a pram and walking him round for a bit to start with and see if that works ?

gem1984 · 17/10/2006 21:29

that works but as soon as he realizes that the pram has stopped he wakes... this used to be gr8 in summer coz the fresh air keeps him asleep so i just left the pram outside my back door and he slept but the weather is too crap for that now

Not sure about this, sorry. Hopefully someone else can come along and help with that

Have you tried not putting him down for naps until he has grizzled for a while? My DD has gone through phases of refusing to go down for naps and/or night sleeps. In the end, the only thing that has worked is not letting her go to bed until she is desperate for some rest. She has also learned to occasionally fall asleep in her gym etc which makes life easier for me! I know it is the opposite of books which suggest getting baby down for naps as soon as he appears tired, but some babies are just contrary I think!

gem1984 · 18/10/2006 21:39

yeah i have but if he doesnt go to sleep when he is tired he gets VERY VERY ratty and if i leave it til then he just fights going o sleep which makes him worse
