I am thinking of going to a university that is about an hours drive each way..but not sure ifs its possible being a single parent to a six year old. I have an OK family support network so could manage (i think) but wanted some views from people with real experience of it..anyone?

I'm not a student or a single parent, but have managed a long commute to work before. In favour: presumably the qualification would enhance your career prospects thereby providing better opportunities for you and your LO in the future, you'd get to meet and socialise with loads of new people, uni terms not that long and you'd be off in the school holidays most of the time, your hours might be quite flexible so you'd be able to be there in mornings and evenings, your child is school age so childcare for most of the day shouldn't be a problem, your course will presumably only last a few years.
On the downside - you'd have a long commute, the petrol will cost you a fortune.
I'd go for it.

I think it is manageable.
Sal makes some good points.

It will make you smile wryly to know that on my p/t mSc,we have people flying in to M'c'r from Dublin, then driving to Bangor for weekly lectures!
One has 5 kids!!
