Does your toddler still drink milk ??

Hi all,

DS is 27 mo and recently at his 2 year HV checkup, it was recommended that we should reduce his milk intake. He currently has 6/7 ounces first thing when he wakes up and also at bed time. Apart from this, he also has yogurt and cheese almost everyday... Yogurt as his lunch time dessert and cheese as his afternoon snack.... Is that too much dairy produce in one day ?

Also, he still has his milk from his bottle... Any ideas how to stop this ??
Furthermore, some days he will cry at 5 in the morning (or even earlier) for his milk.... On most days we give in and give him a bottle and then he goes back to sleep. My guess is that he is only looking for comfort and is not really hungry....
Would appreciate your views...

TIA :)

Ds has a cup of milk in the morning, sometimes two, plus milk with porridge and a yoghurt later on.

I just stopped giving him a bottle when he was one so no advice on that I'm afraid, he was never really attached to it though so I was lucky!

SpottyTeacakes · 17/01/2015 20:12

Oh ds is 26 months. I don't think the tommee tippee cups hold much maybe 4oz?

dementedpixie · 17/01/2015 20:13

they only need the equivalent of around 300mls/11oz per day at that age. If it doesnt affect his solids intake then I wouldnt worry too much.

Give him the milk in a sippy cup. That should put an end to the bottle. If he's thirsty he'll drink it...

dementedpixie · 17/01/2015 20:14

you also get bigger tommee tippee free flowing cups with no handles that hold a bit more

My ds was also off bottles by 1 year so can't help with that aspect

trilbydoll · 17/01/2015 20:14

DD is 20ml and has 150ml milk + 60ml water morning and evening. I don't think she really needs it because if I try a Sippy cup instead if a bottle she isn't interested. I am too scared of her sleep deteriorating even further to risk stopping though!

My plan is to increase the water and decrease the milk, until she realises she is drinking white water. I don't think a bottle is a problem if they just drink it in one go then put it down, isn't it having it dangling out if their mouth for hours that is the issue?

What the reason for milk being a problem?

DS is 21mo and still has a bottle before bed, approx 6oz. Like another poster, I'm not prepared to mess with a system that has him sleeping through 99% of the time!

mumtosp · 17/01/2015 20:26

Thanks all.

ThuesdayLast I never got a clear answer from the HV about why milk intake should be reduced... She just showed me a chart of how much calcium a 2 yo needs and according to that DS is definitely getting more than required... Although she didn'tt say that too much calcium will cause any problems...

Tonight was the first time we replaced his bottle with a dippy cup and he didn't mind... And he seems to be sleeping well so fingers crossed that it doesn't impact his sleep routine...

I am not sure how I can stop his morning bottle though.... I don't mind him having milk in the morning, I just wish it didn't have to be at 5 am. Ideally I would like him to be fully awake for his morning milk.... That way he can have it from a sippy cup

SpottyTeacakes does your DS have his milk while in bed ??

Thanks again :)

No he doesn't, once he's up he's up! Downstairs and demanding 'mook!'

Hmm it's tricky. 5am is not a fun time to be up (we have our fair share). I would probably replace it with water then give milk once out of bed and downstairs.

It's only a problem, though, if it's a problem for you or him. If you're happy with things then carry on Smile

mumtosp · 17/01/2015 20:38

SpottyTeacakes we tried giving him water... But he just cried for his milk! :(

It's the 5 am wake up that is killing me..... Previously we used to get by 6:30 which was perfect...
I guess we just have to let him cry it out for a couple of times and then he may get the message that 5 am is too early.... Just seems too harsh :(

My 25mo dd has 6oz milk from a bottle in bed at 7 then goes straight to sleep
3oz milk mixed with 3oz water at 1am ish, she wakes for it
And the milk/ water mix again at 5am to buy me another hour in bed..

My attitude is 'if it's not broke don't fix it!'

SpottyTeacakes · 17/01/2015 20:41

We always just get up when the dc wake up early. We've no hope of keeping them quiet so might as well get coffee Grin how long has he been waking at 5? Ds can do it for weeks at a time and then suddenly stop

mumtosp · 17/01/2015 20:46

spotty just in the last 2 weeks....

fishfingerSarnies · 17/01/2015 20:47

At that age can you tell him milks from a bottle is for babies and now he's a big boy if he wants a drink he will have to have it from a big boy cup with his breakfast. Then when he wakes early just say it's not morning yet and tuck him back in if he gets upset repeat but don't give in to the milk.

maybe point out babies drinking from bottles or do something about "giving his bottles away to a baby that needs it"?

SpottyTeacakes · 17/01/2015 20:49

Oh I reckon he will stop early waking of his own accord. Then, just as you think you're safe, he will start doing it again Grin (sorry!)

Thesimplethings · 17/01/2015 20:50

My 3 year old has 9oz of milk in the morning and a bowl of cereal, a carton of milk with fruit as a snack at nursery, lunch which could be a cooked meal or snacks such as cheese and breadsticks with veg/fruit. Dinner is always a hot meal, Spag Bol/roast/fish, potato, veg and yoghurt for pudding. He will then usually have a treat after bath such as a small chocolate. Before bed he has another 9oz of milk.

He's a skinny little thing and sleeps 12/13 hours a night but never stops when awake.

Do what's right for you and dc not what guidelines say.

Thesimplethings · 17/01/2015 20:53

Ah cross post! It's the early waking that's a problem?

Is it warm enough? Mine used to wake around 4/5am until we realised that they were cold. Now we have the heating set at 17.5 they sleep till 8.30.

Thesimplethings · 17/01/2015 20:54

Oops forgot to say, no naps through the day either.

BabyX · 17/01/2015 20:57

My DS was breastfed till almost 2. After that he never drank milk, not a drop, apart from on cereal. He has yogurt and cheese and is in tip-top form.

Can too much calcium reduce iron intake?

Or did I dream this

dementedpixie · 17/01/2015 20:59

there is not a lot of iron in cows milk and too much milk can put them off more nutritious solid foods. They don't need much milk as they can get the same nutrients from food.

afreshstartplease · 17/01/2015 21:00

Ha I knew it was something to do with iron

DandyMott · 17/01/2015 21:01

My 22mo has a cup of milk at bedtime and sometimes she asks for some during the day and I will give her a cup.

She has weetabix for breakfast and will eat a little cheese every day but she's not a fan of yoghurt so the bedtime milk is her main source of calcium.

ThursdayLast · 17/01/2015 21:03

That makes sense demented.

No need to worry with my DS then. His appetite is truly something to behold Grin
