Is it possible to avoid play dates?

Or is that really mean?

DS is 2. I am terrified and worrying already about school and play dates, I suffer anxiety and am incredibly shy

If it isn't possible to avoid how do you make sure they are safe etc?

Of course you can avoid play dates, but I think it would be unfair not to come up with some way of allowing your DS to socialise with his friends in an age appropriate way. Luckily you have few years to come up with a coping strategy. How about suggesting meeting on neutral territory (local park?) rather than at home. Once you get to know the parents you may feel more comfortable.

I am pretty outgoing but after 3 years of toddler play dates I don't enjoy them either ! I think the advice of the park is a good idea I have had some times when people came over with their toddlers when I really ran out of things to say to the other mum and it has put me off them ..I only do it now if its actually a friend of mine

Park or soft play. 100%. Then you don't have to leave them.

But, one day you will have to let them go. It is part of life and important for children to learn to be away from their parents in different, and sometimes potentially risky, situations.
