Boastful Friends

My 6 yr old boy decided to tell his friend today that he doesn't like his boasting. Needless to say it didn't end well and he came home really upset. I know the child, he does exaggerate and can be boastful about things he has or stuff he is going to get. His mother is lovely and if ask her, 'oh are you moving house?' Because he son has been bragging that they are moving to a mansion etc etc, she says, no, he has obviously heard half a conversation and embellished it for his school friends.
Anyway I did have a talk with my son beforehand as he said he thought his friend was boastful and that he didn't like it. I went through options of what he could do, ignore him, change the topic or he could say something, bearing in Mind that it may hurt his friends feelings. He decided to do the latter and is now very upset that they are not talking and that his friend didn't seem to agree or at least try to make the effort for him. He feels like he is being disrespectful.
I just don't know what to say or what advice to give now as my son says he feels very frustrated and sad. He was a boastful child once and I had the talk and from listening to him with his friends he isn't anymore so he knows it's wrong and why. He just can't seem to grasps that not everyone else knows it!!
What should I do????
