Are boosters mainly for use at nighttime or should I be putting in every nappy?

I assume you're talking about inserts for cotton nappies? They're for use mainly at night; during the day, a wet cotton nappy should be changed as soon as possible.

lrwg · 16/10/2006 09:07

Thanks - thought so. Have just started using Wambamboos and finding it all a bit scary.

I use disposibles at night, just never found a washable nappy that I didn't need to change in the middle of the night.

I think we're going to use disposibles at night - just easier and more peace of mind! Each nappy came with a booster in it, so will maybe experiment one night and see how we go, otherwise I guess I could use them as washable wipes.

I find the boosters great for mopping up spills on the kitchen floor

Dragonhart · 16/10/2006 11:04

I have Wambamboos and use the boosters for every nappy.

Think the idea is that you dont use it if you use a size 2 as a birth to potty nappy and are using it on a newborn, then when your baby gets bigger, you use it all the time as part of the nappy.

Having them separate means they are quicker todry as fewer layers. Also means you can have the thickness of the nappy wherever you want it.

My DS is 14months and is quite a heavy wetter, so I have to fold it in half at the front. But if they are working for you without the booster, then it is less to wash and dry so I would not bother.

I havnt been using cloth nappies long either, and I am still using a disposable for night time too. Just havnt plucked up the courage to use one at night as I am just sure they wont last, and I will have to get up to change the bed, DS and nappy in the night. As I am 6 months preg, need all the sleep I can get!!

Hope that helps. x

Yes - with WBBs you need the boosters at all times, otherwise you only have 2 layers of fabric to absorb which will do nothing really. You need the extra boosters (like the mother of eden style ones) at nighttime. Tots have the normal booster sewn in, so there is no querying when to use it, but the seperate one is easier to dry, and easier to move to where you want it. I fold the wbb one in half and put it over the boy bits/under the girly bits.

bobsmum · 17/10/2006 09:33

No experience of WBBs, but to those using disposables at night, I find the opposite - I just don't trust 'em!

On the very few times ds or dd have used a mainstream disposable at night they've been so full in the morning that the hideous evil gel crystals have leaked out onto their skin - freaky stuff! Either that or everything's damp.

If I go away on holiday I'll use Moltex during the day, but always cloth at night - no way would I take the risk with a sposie!

UniSarah · 17/10/2006 10:18

Bumbles with booster are fine all night for my ds. yes they may be soggy in teh morning( esp if hes been awake shouting in te night) , but thats the point isn't it. The flease liner keeps him dry and teh wrap keeps wet terry away from his PJs so teh bed is dry. only times we have had seepage is when dh or I havn;t been carefull about checking for peeping terry above the wrap waist band.
I occasionaly use a booster in the day if we are going to be out about for several hours and I only want to take one spare nappy with me.

CornflakeKid · 17/10/2006 11:29

You can use boosters day or night - you can get fleece topped ones to keep baby drier. You don't need to change a cloth nappy as soon as it is wet - can usually be worn for about 2-3hours before a change is needed - but like with any nappy - always change a pooey nappy straight away.

There are loads of great cloth nappies you can use overnight - and which don't need to be changed unless they have done a poo. You need to make sure you get the absorbency right so they last through the night - I have used fleece stuffable nappies at night because you can stuff in as much as you like and when they get up in the morning their bottoms feel nice and soft and pretty much dry. Would recommend fuzzis or lollipop rainbows - as they don't need a cover or easypeasy nappies due to pocket and fleece inner - but do need a wrap - and a decent one - like a motherease or onelife.

If you have a local nappy network near you, a council intitiative or a lollipop advisor - get in touch as they may be able to offer you a trial kit and then you can figure out exactly what you need without spending a fortune.

Good luck - sorry if bit of a rant - slightly passionate about cloth!

PinkTulips · 17/10/2006 11:37

same as bobsmum here, i find the disposables much less reliable han cotton. dd is a very heavy wetter and the few times we've used disposables they explode that awful chemical gel everywhere and they can't cope with runny poo at all.

i use bambino mios for dd, she's 10 kgs but in the 12-15 kgs size for months already. works just fine and rarely leaks. as some one else said, being soggy in the morning isn't a bad sign!

also, you'll find most babies and toddlers don't wet as much throught the night when they're sleeping so just because day nappies are soaked quite quickly doesn't mean they won't cope at night.

Dragonhart · 17/10/2006 19:08

ok, ok, I have been feeling guilty about using disp at night and if you all say that they will be ok, then will give it a try. Have just bought some more wambamboos and bamboo terrys so I have enough for using all the time. Will try them. x

UniSarah · 17/10/2006 19:31

ytou'll be fine dragonhart, just remeber to check there is no peeping terry outside the wrap before popping babyhart into their sleepsuit/pjs .

lrwg · 18/10/2006 08:23

Bobsmum - guess what!!! Her disposable leaked last night

Think I may try WBB at night, just need to convince DH and buy some new wraps - I tried false economy of buying "pre-loved" MEs and they leak through the middle of the back (no bits sticking out etc.)

Irwg - eek I didn't really want you to find out that way! At least you can justify som enew wraps. Motherease have a new Asia print with pandas on it and it's sooo cute. If you do ever go for second hand again - always ask if they've been tumbled or pre-soaked- I think that's the real killer for the waterproofing. The eco print wraps haven't been around for that long and I think may even be a better quality PUL than previously. SO be wary of second hand whale print/paw print/ block colour wraps unless the seller is adamant on the waterproofness (is that a word??)

Motherease are the best wrap there is IMO - especially the poppers one. I also like Wee Notions (a bit pricier but gorgeeeeeouuuuus!) and nature babies.

And boost boost boost

DettaJnr · 19/10/2006 21:16

I use microfibre cleaning cloths from Aldi! They are made from the same material as the boosters and cost half the price, the dry really quickly as they are in a square and you fold them in the nappy. They are very absorbant and I use them during the day. I use Moltex if I need to use a disposable (no horrible gel stuff or bleach).
