ok, am doing ou degree, and next year I need to start doing residential schools.

How does it work with the kids? I can sort out childcare for a week but my kids are little and I'm not vanishing off up to Durham for a week on my own!

Anyone know if I can take them with me? Or can I rent a house nearby and just go in for lecturey stuff? Will they still charge for accomodation?

I ahve been on lots of OU residentials I ahve known people who are breastfeeding babies to bring them along but other than that no. Once dp and dd stayed nearby so I still enjoyed my week of independence but we had a nice weekend together,

you dont have to go to residential school when you have kids! kids are a great excuse to get out of it!!!

aargh, this is a problem then

I have to do the residential school to pass the course

I wouldn't take them to the course with me, but ideally I'd like to have them on the campus at least, or if not, I'd stay nearby but don't want to pay for accomodation I'm not going to use.

Which course are you doing? Mine had a on-line alternative version.

physics

don't think I can do it online, really

its all about doing experients and stuff.

there must be a way round this, surely? I can't be the only person who doesn't want to leave their two young kids for whole week to go haring up to the other side of the country?

Shall phone the OU and check.

AHHH - now I see. I am sure they will help you come up with a way round this!

I left mine. It was great. It sounds awful, but I didn't really miss them. I thought I would, but I got so immersed in the work that it was like another world. Dh took the week off work and they all had a great time. It's only five days.

Regarding just going in for lectures, there is a LOT of contact time, or at least there was on mine. They fit a vast amount into the five days, and you need to be able to give it your full attention.

hmmm

it might be that I should leave it a year or two then and do my courses in a different order.

am suprised there is no alternative way of doing it, eg 5 sucessive Saturday schools somewhere central, or something.

At a pinch, I could manage it. Also, because I am doing a degree, I do have the option of doing all the required summer schools (3, I think) in one summer, if it comes to it (there's one in mallorca that looks especially interesting ).

I don't want to leave my kids, but that is my choice entirely. Some people have caring responsibilities with no back up and don't have this option. It just seems...dunno...inflexible.

anyway.
