Hi,

Not sure where to post this, but will try here as well as 'Childbirth'.

At my 6 week check with DS3 the doctor prescribed antibiotics because I was still bleeding very small amounts and she thought I may have retained a bit of tissue and may have an infection. I was told to come back in 10 days if things hadn't cleared.

The 10 days have been and gone, but there was a wierd bit of bleeding last night, so I assume something is still in there.

Does anyone know what they will do now? I assume it will be a D&C, but I don't really know what that will involve. Does it normally happen under general anaesthetic? Is there a recovery time when you are not allowed to be active? (I hope not, with 3 to look after).

Many thanks in advance for any help you can give.

If you do have a D & C, iirc it is usually under a general anaesthetic. I don't think there is a particular recovery time, but I think you are meant to have someone with you for the 24 hours after the general anaesthetic. Last time my mum had a D & C she was out shopping in Leeds 2 days later.

Sorry you are going through this Crayon. They do give you a d&C under general anaesthetic but it is just a bit more than a local so that you sleep as it is considered too upsetting to be awake (that is what I was told anyway). Therefore recovery is quicker than a normal general. However you should take it a bit easy for a couple of days, no heavy lifting etc and don't drive yourself home afterwards (I did that once without knowing I wasn't meant to!)

Just read your OP again - doh! - I was offered d&c's for missed miscarriages (and the general because of upset from m/c), might not be the same for you in the case of retained products post-birth. Hope that is clear - 32 weeks pg and brain feeling a bit fuzzy today.

if you need one, it happens under ga but is usually quick and routine (day surgery).

the recovery time is usually a couple of days. hope all goes ok for you.

Thanks all, that is really helpful.

Does anyone know if you can breastfeed after a general anaesthetic? If not, do you know how long you have to stop for?

many thanks

i have no idea! if you have no luck with answers try posting on the breast and bottlefeeding section? hth

If you need a D&C it is done under general anaesthetic and will not interfere with breastfeeding.

It may be however that you will still get treated conservatively - that means letting it settle itself. It is not uncommon still to bleed a bit especially since you are breastfeeding. It is likely you would be offerred a scan to see if there are retained proucts still there. TBH I think antibiotics are prescribed too readily - it may not have been retained products in the first place.

Unfortunately my periods returned at 6 weeks despite breastfeeding exclusively.
