bronchiolitis

Mumtobenovember · 01/01/2015 18:29

My preemie girl is 13 weeks actual and 5 weeks corrected she was born at 32 weeks.
She's had a cough for the last few days and then cold like symptoms started yesterday.. Last night her breathing was very unusual she was sucking in under her ribs quite a lot and was taking more breaths.. We called 111 who sent an ambulance and then we spent the night in the children's hospital so she could be observed. We where told she had bronchiolitis a mild case but this could worsen as it's only day 2. We where sent home, she still isn't right coughing and breathing strangely- does anyone have any experience of this I'm so worried I can't relax or sleep Sad

Gp? Are they for real it's fucking New Year's Day!!!

Go to a&e!

Muchtoomuchtodo · 01/01/2015 22:44

Babies do get tired very quickly. If you're concerned, please take her back.

staverton · 01/01/2015 22:48

Take her back definitely

Take her to A&E to be seen. It is true that in many hospitals you have to go back through A&E to be admitted (it is the case for the one I work in). When the triage nurse sees you at A&E explain that you have only just been discharged, they will see you get quickly with a baby with breathing difficulty.

ohdearitshappeningtome · 02/01/2015 02:03

Hope your dd is ok!

Mumtobenovember · 02/01/2015 06:44

Brought he in- when we arrived she stopped breathing and was rushed strait into resus she's now on a ward with oxygen and a feeding tube and hooked up to all kinds of machines I have never been so scared in my life I can't cope

That sounds terrifying, thank god you weren't put off by the nurse and took her back. She's in the right place to get the best treatment now, as scary as it seems.

Don't forget to take care of yourself and eat and drink. If you're breastfeeding they'll have pumps you can use to keep your supply up.

ohdearitshappeningtome · 02/01/2015 07:26

Oh my! Didn't expect to wake to that update!!

She's in the best place. Being looked after by the best people - the doctors and you!! Your mummy instinct is never wrong!!

As the pp said look after yourself too, rest when she is. The virus peaks around day 4 then plateaux!!

Here to hand holdThanks

Sirzy · 02/01/2015 07:47

You can cope. It's horrible but you will find a way.

Make sure you ask the staff questions, they should explain to you the purpose of each of the machines and what the numbers mean.

Hopefully now she is getting treatment she will quickly perk up

Bunbaker · 02/01/2015 07:51

What a worry for you. I hope she makes a speedy recovery Flowers

TBH I'm surprised they sent her back home so soon in the first place.

ohdearitshappeningtome · 02/01/2015 07:58

Bunbaker, when my ds had it they sent us home at 0830 because he has fed every three hours in the night! We were admitted again the same evening and in for a further 5 noghtsHmm

Bunbaker · 02/01/2015 08:25

When DD had it she was in for three weeks. She had a tracheostomy though which complicated matters. She was on oxygen for several days.

AnotherStitchInTime · 02/01/2015 09:37

So sorry to hear the update and so glad you went in. Now she is getting the care she needs she will be fine. It is very scary having a baby or child in HDU (my 2 year old was on bipap in hdu just before Christmas and narrowly missed being ventilated, I found it scary and I work in paeds), but once they get the support they need to get them over the worst of it they go from strength to strength.

There are lots of babies with bronchiolitis in the hospital where I work at the moment. It is the season for it. The NG tube into their stomach allows them to feed without having to work so hard so they can use all their energy to fight the virus and get better. The machines will allow them to monitor her oxygen saturation and heart rate so they can see that she is getting enough oxygen and not working too hard to breathe.

Sending you lots of hugs. Don't forget to eat, try to sleep (it is tempting to stay up watching the monitors, but they will alarm if there is a problem) and have a shower, it is easy to forget to look after yourself when your child is in hospital, but you need to remain well so that you can be there for her.

LittlePeasMummy1 · 02/01/2015 10:48

Sounds like what happened with us, she is being well looked after now and you'll be amazed how quickly she turns the corner with the right care. This time next week this will all be a memory. Try and be good to yourself and get some sleep. All the best.

aurorasky · 02/01/2015 18:22

Hope things are going OK.

Ineedacleaningfairy · 02/01/2015 19:38

How terrifying :( I'm so sorry to hear about how ill your dd is. When my dc was in resus when he had rs virus it was the most terrifying moment of my life. Babies are amazing though, they get better as quickly as they get ill and although it's really scary whilst it's happening a nurse told me that the vast majority of babies make a quick full recovery. Sending you some hugs BrewFlowers

Mumtobenovember · 03/01/2015 00:19

She's ok- she's not doing any better she was still dropping in the night on her stats but she's levelled out now I haven't slept in 48 hours because her cough is so bad it chokes her and wakes her up and she screams her little heart out :( it's so upsetting I am exhausted and can't stop crying thanks for all your kind words

Is she on heated humidified oxygen via a nasal cannula (Optiflow)? It is less drying than standard oxygen therapy which helps with the cough. If someone can get you a humidifier to have in the room that can also help. Is there anyone who can swap with you or sit with her for an hour or so while you sleep?

ohdearitshappeningtome · 03/01/2015 08:18

We were given two types of nebuliser when we were in!

Keep well

aurorasky · 03/01/2015 09:43

Oh you poor thing, it's terrifying, I remember it well! Going to keep checking for updates, until she bounces back to health. Big hug, get well soon little one. X

LittlePeasMummy1 · 04/01/2015 14:10

Hope things are getting better. Thinking of you.

Christelle2207 · 04/01/2015 14:17

Thinking of you. so pleased you were at the hospital when she worsened. I know several kids who've been very ill with this, mine included, she'll be ok you just need to wait it out a little while.

Bunbaker · 04/01/2015 14:19

How is she today?

aurorasky · 04/01/2015 20:42

Still thinking of you. X
