Not sure where to post - Baby sleeping bag?

Hello all!

New mum due in Jan, and conflicting info on the net is confusing me.

I have a couple of sleeping bags for my new baby (I think they are 2.5 tog) And I can't seem to find what the "normal" is for what they wear while sleeping in it! :/

I may sound like a dummy even asking this.

My thoughts were for Jan it would be a long sleeve sleepsuit? But I really haven't the foggiest. I mean I know what temperature the room should be, but not sure what the little un should be wearing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

We used sleeping bags once dd got to the correct weight 8lb something I think, she was about 5 weeks old the ones we got has poppers under the arms so she couldn't wriggle down inside. She is wearing a short sleeved vest a sleepsuit and a 2.5 bag, usually this is enough but the odd time she will wake up because she's cold you can get 3.5 bags for really cold nights though.

Might be worth having a backup plan just in case your baby is too small for the sleeping bags at the beginning. My 6lb 3oz baby was slow to put on weight and took ages to get to the minimum weight for the grobag (check the packaging). I believe they can't go in them if they're too small in case they ride up over their heads. I used sleeping bags as soon as he was heavy enough, much easier! Before that I cut up a cotton sheet into several small sheets to tuck over him, then put a cellular or home knitted blanket on top.

My midwife said that newborns will cry if they get too cold but if they get too warm they can just go drowsy, so I always erred on the side of fewer layers if in doubt.

Agree with others my dd was far too small for a sleep bag for the first 3 months. .think minimum weight is something like 8 or 9lb but label will say!

After she grew into them though they are great, she is 10 mo and we still use them. She has a 2.5 tog one and currently wearing long sleeved vest and babygro underneath it

Minimum weight is 8/9lb.
I use jojo Maman bebe sleeved sleeping bags at min with short sleeved vest & long sleeved baby gro. He likes the warmth & our bedroom is massive, over an alleyway with only a single radiator.

It's such a mindfield but you will honestly just get to know what is right for your little one !

I shall be using the Love to Dream Swaddle for my new born in feb. It allows baby to feel secure but not as restrictive as a normal Swaddle.
As pp's have said grow bags can be quite big for a newborn.
My ds always had a short sleeve vest and baby grow plus 2.5 tog in winter. Always check back or chest and not hands or feet.

It depends a great deal on the temperature of your house and how well insulated it is, etc.

Grow bags should only be used from 9lbs it took my preemie 3 months to get into his but what I'm gonna say is I started with 2.5 tog by grobag but he was to cold even with short sleeve vest and fleece sleepsuit but live in old georgian flat when temperature in room started to get to 18 and under I had to buy 3.5 tog grobag and grosuits look them up they're a normal sleepsuit with thick arms to keep heat in brilliant he now sleeps warm for that hour a night that he sleeps Grin

For a good weight baby you can use gro bags from birth but many newborns would rather be swaddled at first. My pfb was 8lb at birth and big enough for some group bags from 2 weeks but he wouldn't settle in one for three months, we had to swaddle. Number 2 has to have her arms swaddled over her group bag still at six months! I would not expect to use bags from day one, probably half of babies will be too small. Once in bags, I find short sleeved vest plus sleepsuit fine for most of the year. Lose the vest in the summer, use a long sleeved vest in very cold weather.
