Would you let your 5 year old chew chewing gum.........

I have a small dilema, my dd is 5 and pesters me nonstop to let her have chewing gum. I have automatically said no every time, as I'm worried she will just eat it, choke, get it in her hair, on the furniture etc etc. The trouble is, we live in a close, and my dd best buddies (aged 5 and 6)both are allowed it. They come to call for her chewing away merrily. I am now wondering whether it is all that bad after all, and to just let her. I feel like I'm being the meanest mummy in the world!!
Anyone any opinions on this????

Say no & ask other children in your house not to chew while at your house

You are so right

southeastastralplain · 12/10/2006 08:12

no only because it would get everywhere if they missed the bin and it's such a pain to get off pavements etc. so it's easier to not start them off with it iykwim! my ds(13)'s school is covered with the stuff and looks awful.

scarymaryme · 12/10/2006 08:13

I thought so too but a persistant 5 year old, with big watery dopey eyes has great persuasive powers!

No.

pooka · 12/10/2006 09:12

No. think makes people look bovine. I only chew gum when I need to (like immediately before dentist/hairdressers for example, if have just had cup of coffee). Quick chew, then discard in bin.

LadyMacbeth · 12/10/2006 09:13

no way.

izzybiz · 12/10/2006 20:15

I would say no too im afraid.

You will never beleive this, we were at a family party and my 4 year old niece is allowed to have chewing gum, i personally dont think she should be, but not my choice.

She was getting a chewing gum from nanny (MIL), and MIL then went to give one to my Dd. She is 2!

I said "theres no way she is having that" and MIL replied "why? shes had them before hasnt she?"

WTF?

DarkAlleyBongo · 12/10/2006 20:19

nope

hulababy · 12/10/2006 20:20

My 4.5yo isn't allowed chewing gum or bubble gum and won't be for a long time.

anniebear · 12/10/2006 21:16

No way!

pointyfangedWeredog · 12/10/2006 21:36

My kids were probably about 5 or 6 when they first jhad a bit of chewing gum and/or bubble gum. It was a novelty, they'd seen it and they wanted to try it. Every so often I'll give them a bit of gum if I'm having some. There are strict disposal rules - I agree, it's a messy thing.

Dd1 is a chewy kid and occasionally chooses bubble gum if she can get a treat. DD2 never has, she's a sucky kid. Neither are that mad on it though.

If I was in your posisiton I'd let her have a bit. But it's fair enough that you've said no - don't think you're being really mean!
