happens every lunchtime....

dd2, who will be 3 next week has been having tantrums allt his week at lunchtime...
it starts off about 11.45 when I ask her what she wants for lunch, and she tells me, then about 15 mins later, when I start getting it ready she says she doesn't want it and asks for "milk" instead.

I say, no milk until after lunch and it goes on, yesterday for an hour. I put her upstairs as she was kicking and screaming. Same thing again today, she is upstairs crying now, asking for milk.

she doesn't eat much in the morning, so it's important for her to have lunch, she should be hungry. breakfast was a few dry shreddies and some crusty bread. One biscuit at 10.00am.

I don't know what to do with her, as the putting in her bedroom doesn't seem to be getting the message across as it's 3 days in a row now. do I throw her old "milk" beakers away? Have been intending to do this for ages, but too scared as they are her comforter, she goes to bed with a beaker of milk... and they go with her wherever she goes.
sorry, longer than I intended!

Could you try giving her half a cup of milk, then lunch, then more milk?

bagpussmice · 11/10/2006 12:39

wouldn't that be giving in to her though, so all her tantrums have been worth it for her...
I told her milk after lunch.... have offered her water

Leave her to it. Dont give in. Who is in charge here?

Then tomorrow, dont say anything and wait until she says shes hungry. Have you got the time to do this?

I dont see how throwing her cups away will make a difference, esp if she still has one at night.

evilanniedividedin2byalargeaxe · 11/10/2006 12:44

Depends if you can stand to listen to the screaming! If she has milk to drink with her lunch anyway, does it matter what order she has it?

I used to not make a big deal. if lunch was eaten, fine, if not, it went in the bin with no fuss, and nothing else offered until next mealtime. There is a lot to be said for 'they'll eat when they're hungry'!

I hope you get it sorted.

she finally came down at 12.50 and has just polished off a plate full of cheese on toast, and acts as if nothing has happened. I am all in a stew and pissed off aobut it

she doesn't have milk with her meal, just water. then milk after lunch. otherwise she would never eat anything, just drink milk all day

I'd give her 1/2 open cup of milk WITH her lunch

Don't be in a stew, it's a phase, it'll pass.

bagpussmice · 11/10/2006 13:16

thanks all. have told her all the baby beakers will be going when she is 3 anyway - can't wait, they are a pain as we have to take them everywhere with us,

I often hide the milk from dts and tell them its all gone, they accept that with no fuss.

bagpussmice · 11/10/2006 13:18

good idea about hiding the milk, but won't work as dd1 has milk before bedtime too. I think once the beakers have gone, she won't want the milk anymore - that's the plan anyway

But it will work through the day, it does'nt matter that it magically reappears by bedtime.
