dd v. upset by teacher

My 8yo dd made a card for her teacher. She subsequently saw it in the waste paper basket in the classroom. She is very hurt. She wants me to ask the teacher why she threw it away. What would you do??

Oh that's terrible. I think I would let the teacher know that it was seen in the bin and as a result dd was pretty upset this weekend. I'd say it as though I wasn't bothered myself but to warn her dd may not be very responsive this week

Oh no, that's terrible!

I would definitely talk to the teacher, and I would be pretty short with her, I'm afraid. That just isn't good enough.

#FGS call herself a teacher!!! These sorts of incidents can cause great trauma to little ones and affect their confidence. Stupid Women!

Im furious for you

oh your poor DD.

yes just speak to the teacher and explain that Dd saw it and although you understand she can't keep everything the pupils give her, your DD was upset at seeing it in thebin.

Hopefully she will take some time out to speak to her about it.

I wouldn't 'go in guns blazing' unless you're sure it was the teacher that threw it away? It could have been another child who was jealous of your DD.

GreenSlashedSleeves · 08/10/2006 15:04

I think I would ask the teacher to come up with a decent explanation, eg. that she had accidentally spilled her coffee all over it, and what a shame, and would your dd perhaps make her another card to take home and keep?

Just an idea. I imagine she will be horrified that she has hurt your dd's feelings though, it probably never occurred to her that it would be seen. Silly woman.

Yes - it did occur to me that someone else might have put it in the bin - perhaps it fell on the floor and the cleaner put it in the bin etc, etc. Thanks for the advice - I did wonder whether we were both being over-sensitive, but it is hurtful to a child when they have spent time making something.

Oh my goodness, how terrible

I got tons of cards, colouring pages & notes etc as a teacher and always pinned them up somewhere or put them on my shelf so the child knew it was appreciated. And, when the time came to put them away (obviously we can't keep them all), I would put them in the bin just before the cleaners emptied them. What an awful thing for your dd to see. I hope it was an accident - I would def raise it with the teacher, in a nice way, just to let her know what DD saw and how upset she is. I'd be interested to hear what the teacher has to say...

I know that sometimes a cleaner in my room would find something that had fallen on the floor and would throw it away without realising.
