Burning disposable nappies

VoluptuaGoodshag · 07/10/2006 21:13

We've just started using our new multi-fuel stove and I stuck one of the dirty nappies in just out of curiosity to find that it was reduced completely to ash. Is it better to burn nappies rather than put them in the landfill or is there a catch?

Probably releases noxious fumes or something.

I think it depends on which ones, some have plastics in (creates dioxins when burned - not good), some are just wood pulp and cotton (Tushies or motlex poss.) and would be safe to burn.

Some councils do burn their nappy waste but there is still the dioxin problem - I'm sure if you google "nappy or diaper incineration" you'd find the answer

Vol I don't know the proper answer but we always burned them on our coal fire.

was going to say the same about it releasing nasty stuff.
plus, do you really want to burn human faeces in your house?

You had better clean the chimney more often

You would put the poo down the loo fist I'd think

VoluptuaGoodshag · 07/10/2006 22:20

The one I burned was just wet, not pooed in but having googled it, the general consensus is that burning isn't good because of the dioxins. However another site on how to use a stove effectively suggested that if there was no smoke coming out of the chimney then the fire is very hot (ie. burning properly thus releasing less emissions into the atmosphere. I did check the chimney earlier when I just had wood on and there was no smoke but wasn't able to tell with the nappy coz it was dark.

Even if it does release some dioxins, how does this compare with putting it in a landfill in terms of the environmental footprint it leaves?

(Still googling and can't find the answer to that one)
