just bought some unbleached nappies from the unicorn (organic, fair trade co op shop)as had not taken change bag with me. they are lovely and dont smell chemically etc.hideously expensive tho . it got me thinking why are nappies bleached, surely something touching our beautiful babies skin should be as chemical free as poss?does anyone really care if their nappies are bright white?

I had some lovely unbleached Tots Bots for DS2, over time with washing and hanging in the sun they have turned bright white. If I was in the position to be buying cloth nappies again I would buy unbleached because they were softer, fluffier and appeared thicker.

They all end up pretty much white with all the washing and sun anyway... I don't know why it matters either!

Agree that the unbleached Tots end up pretty much white anyway after a bit of sun. It's really quite dramatic.

I prefer the natural look I must admit. All my whites go grey whereas the unbleached ones look a lovely cream colour

I prefer the unbleached too. Although as has been said, with washing and the sun, mine have ended up white too.

My nappies used to be bright white but I just put them in with the coloured wash and I never soak them in bleach and now they're pretty unpleasant looking. I don't care and I'm sure he doesn't. I think if I'm doing my bit for the environment by using washables, it seems a shame to ruin the good effort by using bleach or extra long extra hot machine washes.

My sister keeps her terries bright white. I have to admit they look lovely.

I like the coloured ones, and the unbleached ones. I love the look of natural cotton - I think it looks so wholesome!

My clothies are all unbleached & I reckon they don't show up the poo stains as badly (just as well when dd has been overdosing on blueberries). If I use dispicables they're unbleached too (moltex oko).

bottomburp · 07/10/2006 23:02

Liath, i love your calling them dispicables!I am teetering on the edge of using reusables which is why i am messing around with the molto ones.just cant make up mind on brand of reusables so am reading MN threads on the matter. i still wonder why despicables need bleaching though, at least less chemicals wd be in environment during their making.wd love to ask someone from huggies/pampers why they need to be so white?
