9 yo DS is due to take part in his first school rugby tournament tomorrow. All good except tonight he returned home from training and now can't find his gum shield.

I have torn the house apart looking for it and it may be he has left it at school but in the meantime DH and I agree that he can't play tomorrow without the shield. Sod's law he'll get his teeth knocked out. DS says other boys play without guards but surely that can't be right?

He is distraught and I Feel really bad for him but am also mighty cross that he doesn't look after his things properly.

Think this will be a hard lesson to learn but AIBU not to let him play?

As a dentist, no gum shield no play!!!!!! I think all children should have mouth guards at all times TBH.

Oinkypig - as a dentist I'd be really interested in what you would recommend for a 6yr old. We use the 'boil in the bag' ones but have wondered whether we should pay for a proper, fitted one?

Good news Chasingtail. Hope that your DS has a good game tomorrow. Have a Wine!

If DS is right that others play without gum shields, that would worry me a lot as it would suggest that they are very lax. DC's school has an absolute no gum shield no play rule for hockey and rugby. There are "emergency" ones held at school (the boil and bite sort) but they all have their own, fitted at vast expense by dentist who comes to school every year. It is absolutely drummed into them how important it is not to lose them. DD managed to leave hers on a hockey field the other day (at away match) - fortunately found before they left, but the teacher in charge gave her the lecture, and told me when they got back so that I could reinforce the lecture.

Glad you have it sorted OP.

So arrived at school this morning and it was confirmed by PE teacher that under no circumstances would a child be allowed to play rugby without a gum shield. DS given a stern talking to and advised to keep gum shield in his try's at school which seems a very sensible suggestion (he doesn't need it out of school).

Thank God for the friend who had a spare and I now off out to buy my own spares!!
