TheBlonde · 04/10/2006 10:22

DS is 19mths and we go to a music class and a swim lesson

What activies or classes does your toddler attend?
What would you recommend?

Do you think football from 2 years is a good idea?

My son does tumble tots. Has done since 9 months, he's 3.9 yrs now. Dd starting this week. Shes 13 months. Used to take ds to music but stopped as it got too stressfull(it was in a ladies house, not ideal for a curious toddler). Went to toddler groups till he started nursery.
I was thinking about doing football too. I think 2 would be fine. They obviosly suit the session to the ages of the kids. It will be just lots of playing with balls I'd expect.
Would like to do others but can't afford to. Can't really afford tumble tots. So expensive for 2 of them. Can't let dd do music cos of money but they do singing at tumble tots so she's not misssing out completeley.

TheBlonde · 04/10/2006 11:57

I went to a free sample tumble tots session but didn't really like it (this was pre walking though)
Agree about it being pricey - I didn't like that you had to pay to join as well as for the class

Anyone else?

Dd 17mts does Tick Tock (music/actions thing) which is fab.
Swimming and has just started tumble tots-we didn't get a free trial-had to pay £4.90.It does seem a bit pricey as the annual memebership is £20 on top of the classes.

Booris-when you find the biscuit addiction class-let me know as DD has the same affliction!

Bellie · 04/10/2006 12:33

dd (23 months) does swimming lessons and tumbletots. She goes to creche one morning a week too. Agree that tt is very expensive but dd loves it and there is no way that I can stop it now.......

BernieBear · 04/10/2006 12:37

I work part time, but do swim lessons once a week and Mums and Toddlers another afternoon. Also used to do a Tumblezone thing but found it all too rushed etc. We also walk a friend's dog twice a week so lots of nature walks etc! I do feel I don't do enough and would love to do Football with ds (2.6) but can't find any lessons for his age group. Any ideas anyone?

ProfYaffle · 04/10/2006 12:39

A Presma group, v expensive imho but dd loves it. Nursery 2 mornings. Used to also go to a Steiner M&T group but that closed down

bamboo · 04/10/2006 12:45

ds is 13 months. We do a mums and toddlers for one morning and am looking for something else to fill another. We did try a music/singing thing this week but I think he was a bit young.

Our library runs storytime and rhyme sessions weekly which are a good filler esp as they're free!

If he was attending nursery as dd did at this age I wouldn't feel under any pressure to do anything but I feel he might need the social aspect.

What form does Tumbletots take?

WelshBOOris · 04/10/2006 13:12

DD is 2 at the moment

They start ballet at 2.5 so I may start her in March. But TBH Im going to be changing her nursery around the same time as they do pick up from the school she will be starting in Sept and I want her to get settled.
I think ballet aswell as a new nursery will be too much at once

Will wait and see then nag MN about it in March!

fennel · 04/10/2006 13:15

My 2 year old dd3 does nothing except nursery 3 days a week (where they do lots of singing and craft and stuff), and apart from that she just plays. but she does have 2 sisters, plus 2 cousins round the corner, so she has endless company.

Sometimes we go to a toddler group but 3rd time round I find it too boring so it's rare. She likes them though.

incy · 04/10/2006 13:17

Berniebear- there is a company called socatots which do football lessons for toddlers upwards have a look here for a local group . This site is also good for finding local groups/activities what's on for little ones . Personally I do monkey music, Mother and toddler group and gym tots and DS goes to nursery three days. Now feel I am OTT with activities when before I felt I did too little !

rosie79 · 04/10/2006 13:17

My ds is 3 our activities outside of nursery include parks, libraries, walks along the river, bus and train journeys, friend's houses and just walking around town. Before nursery toddler groups were always good!(I have no money for classes though so we've always made do with free activites)

We do lots of camping and hiking too, and he did his first proper climb (50ft sea cliff) at 2.5!

I do lots of sports with him myself, like kicking a ball around, throwing and catching, running and climbing so this is a good way of developing their motor skills and co-ordination which would help if they then started activities like football etc.

riab · 04/10/2006 13:20

DS is 18mo and we do somehting most days:
Monday - CM in morning then trip to park for run around and ball
Tuesday - Small Playgroup/creche in town then trip to library pm
WEd - CM am, Small quiet playgroup pm
Thurs - large noisy playgroup am, trip to conservatory/ avairy/ wildlife garden pm
Fri - Large noisy playgroup am, trip into town for big library and meet dad from work pm

I think as long as you go with what suits your child (and is relativly easy to get to) you will be fine.

I tend ot count CM as an activity as he has other children and different toys there.

We used to do swiming once a week but he started getting a real handful, trying to climb into the big pool etc so I'm giving it a rest for my sake!

Not planning on structured football or dance until he is about 3 i think, but he is a very active little oby so we might end up doing it earlier.
There are story sessions and arty tihngs too but he doesn't like them - too much sitting still!

incy · 04/10/2006 13:21

Bamboo, I go to gym tots (not sure if same as tumble tots) and DS( aged 2) walks along beams (with me supporting of course !), goes on the trampoline, does forward rolls and climbs over and under obstacles. He really loves it but I do think it is a bit expensive as I pay £3.25 for 40 mins. In comparison our mum and toddler group is £1 for 2 hours with free coffee and biccys (which I love and he doesn't !)

incy · 04/10/2006 13:24

sorry, link to socatots is socatots

wheelybug · 04/10/2006 13:40

hi TheBlonde (how's bump getting on ?) !

DD does Jo Jingles, swimming and 1 (sometimes 2 depending on what else we're doing) toddler group. Am considering an arty type group as she suddenly seems to be obssessed by arty crafty things (help !) or a music and movement thing when she is 2.

TheBlonde · 04/10/2006 13:47

Hi wheelybug! (how is the house move going?, I will email you)

Ds3 is just 2 - he doesn't do any classes, just 3 mornings of nursery. He will start swimming lessons when he is 3.

We take him swimming and out on day trips etc all the time with ds2 and ds1 (nearly 4 and 5.5).

Olihan · 04/10/2006 13:57

Ds is 2.9 and dd is 13 months. We go to a toddler group on Tues am, Music with Mummy (singing/action thing) on Weds am, then I take them swimming on a Thurs am. We also meet up with my old antenatal group and all our kids on most Fri ams too.

I used to do Gymtots on a Mon am too but it was a) too pricey, b) meant we had no free mornings and as they sleep between 1 - 4 pm it wiped out my whole week.

Prices do mount up though, especially when there's 2 going. It costs me £14 a week to do the activities with them, and will go up agian when I have to pay for ds to swim. Still, it means I have a good reason to get out of the house and gives them some time to socialise.

chocolateshoes · 04/10/2006 13:59

DS is 15mths. We go to JoJingles, an under 2s swim session, & 2 different parent & toddler grps. That takes up 4 mornings. The afternoons are usually walks or shopping or visiting friends.

I think football sounds great & wd be interested to fing out if there's anything around here. I know of a gymbabies grp for 2+ so I guesss that's the age for the moe physical stuff.

Gobbledispook · 04/10/2006 14:01

Should say, I did a lot more stuff when ds1 was little and I only had him or just him and ds2. Neither were at nursery or school so it was a way to get out. Now ds1 is in school, ds2 is in 3 mornings and 5 afternoons and ds3 is in 3 mornings = so there isn't the time to do so much stuff now.

Different if you are at home all day with them. Gosh, that seems so long ago now!!

Elibean · 04/10/2006 20:19

dd went to Monkey Music for a while, never exactly loved it (would spend most of her time exploring the perimeter with a couple of the lads) but was ok.
Then we did Gymboree (expensive) for a term or two - she liked that a lot, but as she didn't like the joining in stuff, just the equipment, decided soft play was better value.
Took her to playgroup for a long time, once a week, which she loved.
Now at 2.10 she's at nursery 3 mornings per week, and goes to a drop-in craft class once a week, and thats it. We go swimming every week, but not classes. I think she has enough structured time, like to spend the rest on playdates, walks, playing at home, cooking etc

But I can see the day, not far off, when she will be begging for dance classes

rabbitrabbit · 04/10/2006 20:22

Hi, my ds is now 3 and he went to tumble tots and we tried a music class (didn't really like that tbh), as well as playgroups.

He now goes to footie tots once a week and absolutely loves it. It is the highlight of his week and he is crushed in the holidays! It really is woeth going to.

hth

BernieBear · 05/10/2006 09:09

Incy - Thanks so much for that link. Am definately going to take him to that, he loves football (yawn yawn yawn)and that is perfect.

Thanks again

TheBlonde · 05/10/2006 09:53
