Just taken my 17 month old to the dentist.

I asked if he has a dummy or sucks his thumb. He has a dummy only at night.

The dentist said that his teeth are badly affected by a dummy. I need to stop him having it. I said it was an ordthodental one. He said they is no such thing.

So how is the best way to withdraw his dummy x

I look after a boy who has a dummy to sleep with only who has just turned 2. His older brother also had one until he was 3. It is true that they have slightly affected their teeth so will need a brace when older. Unless you knew they had dummies you wouldn't notice their teeth are ever so slightly protruding.
Personally I think your ds is too young to understand if you take away the dummy. I would leave it another year and then explain that he's too old and he needs to give dummy to dummy fairy.
You could always go cold turkey but be prepared for a rough few nights.

Does he have any other comforter object? Might be worth introducing a little blanket just for night and naps to ease the transition.

Others have suggested snipping the top off the dummy so the sucking is less satisfying, others suggest going cold turkey.

As mean as sounds I think cold turkey is properly the way forward. It worked when weaning him off the breast at 14months, only took a few nights.

Wish me luck, I'm devastated that I've damaged my baby boys teeth ??????
