Potty Training - what to do when going out?

Hello

DS (2.11) has been potty training now for about two weeks. At home it is going incredibly well and he happily takes himself off to the potty when he needs to go. For the first week he was in pull up nappies as he refused to wear pants but is now happily in pants. We have had a few short trips out when I have encouraged him to use the potty before we go out and he has been ok when out. However, I don't think I can avoid longer outings for much longer. Have got a portable potty but am concerned that there is still not very long between him knowing he needs to go and really needing to go (iykwim!) so what do we do if we are somewhere really inconvenient - like in a supermarket!

Sorry this is so long but any advice about going out and about with a newly potty trained child welcomed.

TIA

get a pack of those Pampers Care Mats and put it under him in the trolley at the supermarket etc.. then if he wees it will all get soaked up! you can also use these to put the portable potty on - incase he misses!
Good Luck!

Thx TM - they sound like a good idea, though these days he isn't very often sitting in the trolley!

The thing that I am really unsure about is if we are out walking about, you know in a shopping centre or the street, etc. Is it socially acceptable to just get the portable potty out wherever we are???

i just got the portable potty out, if your 2 year old gotta go they gotta go! and in first few days she had to go in middle of asda better using a potty than puddle on floor!

Definitely yes! i do it all the time (3 months into potty training and not going very well...)
People understand and seem to find it quite funny. (Well pret a manger didn't.. but they don't have a toilet so what was i supposed to do!!)

Ok - will throw social embarassment to the wind! Though yesterday when walking home did manage to persuade him to hold in a wee for about 2 metres - this did involve him literally holding it though I don't know if this was out of necessity or because he misinterpreted what I'd said!

Sorry to hijack thread. But am trying to prepare myself for potty training shortly.
Has anyone got any suggestions for lining a car seat for longer trips out in thecar?

Mumbojumbo · 03/10/2006 20:54

I used the Pampers care mats folded up on the car seat. Also had potty to hand and was prepared to stop either when ds2 said "need a wee" or every 20 mins or so.

Most supermarkets will have toilets that you can whisk him off to. Outdoors he could pee somewhere out of the way. I remember potty training dd and I had 2 mins from when she told me she wanted to go, to her weeing! I was pretty fast and I knew where every toilet was situated in that town!
