What baby medicines should I have at home?

DS1 has just had his 8wk immunisations and after a frantic trip to get some Calpol yesterday I'm thinking what else should I have at home just in case? I have a thermometer but thinking along the lines of baby medicines or does Calpol solve all baby ills?

Thermometer, calpol, baby ibuprofen. That's all we needed until ds was a toddler. Then you just need lots of plasters because they make even invisible cuts better don't you know? Grin

Aside from that the normal contents of a first aid box are handy to have anyway.

I would get baby nurofen or calprofen
You can use both to keep temperature down
Give calpol then nurofen 2 hours later
Both can be used every 4 hours on separate intervals

I'd say calpol (paracetamol), baby neurofen (ibuprofen), antiseptic/pain relief cream for scrapes, plasters, teething gel and baby piraton (just in case of any allergic reactions or to help ease the itch of the inevitable chickenpox).

Oh and a snot sucker. Don't forget that, it's very useful!

JustAShopGirl · 22/10/2014 09:36

piriton and calpol along with an ear thermometer and plasters did for us - now they are over 12 have replaced the calpol with paracetemol. Anything else means it is serious enough to need medical intervention or trip out to get something. Even the paracetamol goes out of date here - thankfully.

If your child is in normal health don't bother with a thermometer. You can tell if your child has a fever. And you can tell if they are miserable and in pain and need calpol.

When they are a bit older some sort of anti-itch cream for bites and irritations. Olbas oil is useful- it's a good decongestant, but it also smells strong enough for children to really believe it's doing them good! And medicinal chocolate buttons.

olbas oil, snuffle babe stuff, saline nasal spray, teething gel along with Calpol and ibuprofen.

WeeClype · 22/10/2014 09:48

Have a tube of teething gel handy too.

I have a 11month old and a toddler. in their box we have.....calpol, teething gel, nasel spray, vicks vapour rub, sudocrem, a cheap head thermometer and cough medicine

TinyTear · 22/10/2014 09:49

we stock:

Calpol
Ibuprofen
Cough Syrup
Snuffle Babe - vicks rub type thing
saline nose spray
metanium for the worse nappy rash (or yellow cream as it's known)

i think these are the essentials...

and yes, plasters (Peppa Plasters in our case) and a Peppa 'ice' pack for bumps

This doesn't belong in the "medicine" category, but is useful for colds - the Calpol vapour plug thingy. They stock them in Boots and supermarkets and I find they really help DC's breathing when she has a blocked nose. They're for 3 months plus, and I use them at the same time as snuffle babe and the snot sucker (gross, but effective).

TinyTear · 22/10/2014 10:21

there is something very satisfying in removing a great big blob with the snot sucker
Grin
i wish they did bulb ones for adults

JustAShopGirl · 22/10/2014 10:48

my gran was Greek - she just sucked them out (of babies - not adults!) !!!!

PourquoiTuGachesTaVie · 22/10/2014 11:52

Is there any cough medicine that actually works? I've never found any that works for me as an adult so I've never bothered with it for dc.

TinyTear · 22/10/2014 11:57

We got Calcough but also as a placebo thing... it seemed to soothe my DD (nearly 3y) and she is coughing in her sleep but we feel we have done something...

SophieBarringtonWard · 22/10/2014 14:12

We have Calpol, Baby Neurofen, plasters.

That's it. We don't even have a thermometer. When DC had chicken pox I went out to get creams etc. You really don't need much!
