ds was in hospital yesterday and said something that is worrying me

dh and I took our ds to A&E yesterday as his asthma was really bad.

They were excellent. Anyway whilst we were in the hospital room we were having problems with ds because he wanted to go home. He was screaming and shouting and making a fuss (fair enough hospitals are scary to a 4 year old.)

anyway dh put ds on the bed and told him he had to stay. As the doctor and nurse came in he yelled "you hurt me" - which dh didnt, it was just ds heaving a tantrum. Then he looked at the doctor and said "my daddy hurt me!"

anyway the doctor didnt say anything as I said that ds was making it up. Nothing else was said.
Today suddenly it came back to me and I am really worried that I might end up with social services on my doorstep!

surely if they thought we were bad parents they would have questioned us at the time?

hope this makes sense! should I be worried?

4 year old boys who are horribly beaten by their fathers don't tend to gob off at them in public places, most people know that LOL.

not LOL at you BTW

Emily, please don't worry, think A&E staff would only be concerned if child presented with injuries consisent with abuse. Sure they are used to tantrums and kids saying such things...

also, if they were worried, you'd have known about it whilst you were there.

ds1 aged 3.5 often squeals "You HURT me!" in shops.... upon further questioning, 'Hurt' appears to mean 'Looked at crossly', 'prevented access to chocolate buttons' and 'paid more attention, briefly, to my younger brother' depending on how hard done to he feels.

I don't know - did the doctor look like he was looking for bruises?

friend of ours had a social services visit after she had been to A&E with her ds a few times in a relatively short space of time (with head injuries - he was a v physical and adventurous toddler!). They wanted to check out that the injuries were definitely accidental (and I think once they saw him in action, they had no doubt in their minds how he had got into trouble!).

Colditz, pmsl - sounds like my dd - her fave thing atm is to say "you're nervous of me because I'm so pretty" (she confuses 'nervous' with 'jealous') - does make me chuckle...

twickersmum · 01/10/2006 20:32

my dd looked at me before bed last night and said "you hit me. don't hit me mummy" - i have never hit her. it really upset me, she said it quite spitefully and is only 2 1/2 and is a lovely child. not quite sure why or where it came from, it was totally out of the blue.
anyway, the point i am trying to make is that kids say things like that from time to time and i am sure the doctors know that all too well and are well trained in spotting signs of abuse which won't be a 4 year old saying "daddy hurt me"!

it is common practice in our area to get a phonecall from health visitor after any trip to A&E - if this happens it will be to discuss your management of the asthma and nothing more.

hi everybody. thanks for replying - was feeling very overwealmed and stressed yesterday.

glad other peoples children like to act hard done by - at least it isnt just mine! If I brush past him he squeels "owwww!" as if he has been bowled over.

thanks for all of the advice x

Can't see it being a problem at all - think kids do it all the time. My DS ran off in a shop when 2.5 and when I got hold of his arm to march him back to the buggy, he shouted out as loudly as he could "mummy, please don't break my other arm". Silence descended over the shop and I found myself saying in the most ineffectual way "don't be silly sweetheart" before running out of shop.
