If you want to bfeed, don't buy bottles or a steriliser.

You are statistically less likely to bfeed successfully with bottlefeeding equipment (and emergency formula cartons) in the house.

Good luck with the baby - and post on MN for bfeeding support

MamaGlamourPuss · 30/09/2006 23:45

That is good advice hunker.

hunkermunker · 30/09/2006 23:49

Also if you do ffeed for whatever reason, you might not want a job lot of a bottle your baby will have nothing to do with, so best to wait all round really, IMO. (Thanks, MamaG)

I agree BUT I did have a sterillister for dummies and for later on when I used bottles for water and then formula.

I used the avent ones as they seemed much more "breast" like iywkim..!!!
BUT that said, tt now do a "closer" range that look more realistic to a breast..well as realistic as you can get to a breast with a bottle.!

hunkermunker · 30/09/2006 23:52

Best not to express for the first six weeks as it can muck up your supply, etc - honestly leave it till after the baby's born. There'll still be breastpumps and bottles and sterilisers in the shops after you've had the baby. And you might even be able to ask for them as a present

shhhh · 30/09/2006 23:54

I used the avent one. Be prepared though, bit like milking a cow..! DH used to laugh at me sat there "milking myself". I also used it to relieve myself before dd latched on as my breats we so engorged and full at the start of feeds..even though she was fed on demand, usually every couple of hours.

Oscar22 · 30/09/2006 23:54

great advice - will leave it until the baby is born.

Thanks very much

leave it until baby was born hunker..gosh my pregnancy brain couldn't cope with that!!! Everything had to be ready just in case after I had dd all the shops ceased to trade ..!!!

Oscar22 · 30/09/2006 23:57

maybe i should buy one bottle of each and only use if i can't b'feed hmm

plus, when you have a baby suddenly all these people you hardly know start saying 'do you have a breast pump/steriliser etc' as by the time you are finished with them you'd rather see someone else use them thatn put them in a cupboard so you might not have to buy them at all...
as regards bottles, i wouldn't do anything until you've got bfing well established, but then from my experience the avent bottles never leak but the tommee tippee teats are better so you may find yourself like me, getting different bottles and teats. but there's plenty of time for all that...

aitch71 · 01/10/2006 00:01

honestly, don't buy anything. if bfing isn't working out you can tearfully ask someone else to buy them and avoid paying altogether...
you don't need them, really, just wait.

hunkermunker · 01/10/2006 00:02

If you want to stop bfeeding when the shops are shut, it's the wrong time to be making that decision, because the chances are it's the middle of the night and things are always harder and problems seem bigger in the middle of the night.

My advice is then "grit your teeth, hang on till morning, and come and post your troubles on MN".

If you have bottles in the house, your post will say "I started ffeeding last night", which is a shame if you want to bfeed, I think.

So don't buy anything and I promise you that baby shops will not have ceased trading should you need to purchase bottles and related stuff after you've had the baby.

I loved doing the night feeds, always felt so close to the DCs when it was dark, warm and snuggly and there was this tiny warm soft body snuggled up against me, all I could hear was the suckling sound and the odd contented little sigh.

at you having it all to come!

rarrie · 01/10/2006 11:52

Sorry to be controversial and go against the flow, but as someone who struggled with Bfeeding for several weeks (but then went on to do it for 18 months), a bottle around can really help when you need it. Only Oscar22 knows how she feels about it, but the flip side of the coin is that you avoid using a bottle because everyone tells you not to and then you end up with a baby who refuses to take one point blank and you're stuck for 6 months unable to go anywhere without your baby for more than two or three hours!

Last time, I gave a bottle of EBM (my daughter didn't have formula until she was 6 months old, and weaning) once a week, but that was too little and by 8 weeks she refused the bottle completely. This time I intend to use EBM 2/3 times a week, just so that I can have the freedom to do other things. It is something worth considering!

Anyway, back to your question, I didn't get on with any bottles before, but this time have gone for the Tommee Tippee closer to nature range. You will need a steriliser anyway, because once you start weaning at 6 months, you will still need to sterlise! Usually the bottles come free with the steriliser. Also, another consideration is that if you leave it, you may well be skint by the time the baby gets to 6 months and you have so much to buy then, but its too late by then to have it as a present! Certainly, I found it to be a real struggle once my Mat pay dropped - having to buy extra things then was not good, but again this will depend on your situation!

As for sterilisers, I've gone for a microwave one this time - last time I had a steam one, but found that it was bulky and needed to be out all the time, which didn't work in my very small kitchen!

HTH

Flamebat · 01/10/2006 12:12

I had bottles from the beginning for both of mine... not for "if it doesn't work out" - purely for wanting to express.

I have an avent isis pump, avent bottles and mam ultivent teats which DS has been fine with (DD went through 100s of teats before we settled on one she vaguely tolerated)

hunkermunker · 01/10/2006 12:22

You don't need to sterilise anything once you start weaning though.

And it's perfectly possible to get a baby to take to a bottle at six weeks or slightly after - it's not a "from birth or nothing" thing. DS1 didn't start drinking from a bottle till he was nearly 5 months and it took three days of trying once in the morning and once in the afternoon till he was happy to take it. Then he drank EBM from a bottle happily while I was at work.

vp01 · 01/10/2006 13:29

I really wanted to breastfeed my little boy and stayed in hospital for 3 days whilst trying to get this established - so while it is lovely to think you will be able to breastfeed if you want to - not everyone can. I bought Avent bottles and an Avent steriliser when I came out of hospital and wished I had bought them before "just in case".
