6mo pooing 10+ times a day and nappy rash

Has anyone else's baby had this?

I say 10+ times because I lost count after 10! It's been happening over the past 2 days. He now has nappy rash and is screaming in pain at every nappy change Sad.

He was a bit warm last night, but no fever or vomiting. He's crying a lot, from the nappy rash I think, the rest of the time he's laughing and playful. He hasn't eaten anything new recently. He's bfeeding like mad so luckily not dehydrated.

Any advice or opinions on what could be going on would be amazing. Thank you!

Sounds like he's picked up a tummy bug. Keep BFing on demand ,stop any solids and take him to the doctor if he deteriorates.

Metanium is great for nappy rash. Switch to cotton wool and water if possible. If you don't see an improvement in a day or so, it might be infected with thrush so he'll need anti fungal cream from the Dr.

It could be teething. DD's both had toxic, acid poo which burned their bottoms and caused the only nappy rash they ever had. They also pooed loads but not necessarily full poos mostly just a small amount but very acidic. If you aren't already change his nappy as soon as you notice a smell and use metanium as suggested. It normally lasts a couple of days and then you might notice a new tooth.

Also DD's went into overdrive on the breastfeeding.

There is a terrible tummy bug going. My DS, DD, and I have all had it coming out both ends. My 4 month old seems OK. I bet this is what LO has. Do see the GP. Keep LO well hydrated and keep fever down with Calpol.

Trinpy · 14/10/2014 20:57

Thanks. My first thought was tummy bug but I was a bit thrown by the fact he doesn't have any other symptoms, eating fine, etc. He's just been his usual self, it's only when the nappy rash kicked in that I realised anything was wrong!

I actually switched to metanium today as sudocrem was doing nothing. I will keep an eye on it, hopefully it will be a bit less red tomorrow.

I echo the metanium recommendation for nappy rash. Nothing beats it.

My dd was like this when she was teething

Trinpy · 14/10/2014 21:03

x posted.

He doesn't have a fever or vomiting. Bit tired from being up bfeeding lots during the night, but he's sleeping Ok during the day.

He is dribbling loads at the moment so it could be teething, but he's not grouchy or irritable (apart from when anyone goes near his poor bum!).

Could it possibly be an allergy? Presumably at 6mo he's just starting or recently started solids. Has he tried any new foods that might not be agreeing with him?

UngratefulMoo · 14/10/2014 21:13

Sorry, I missed the line when you said he hasn't had any new foods recently.

gamerchick · 14/10/2014 21:14

Acid poos go hand in hand with teething due to swallowing loads of dribble. It makes their bums so sore poor things.

A good barrier cream and change as soon as nappy is soiled is really all you can do. Use water to clean but rather than wipes.

Showy · 14/10/2014 21:16

DS did this with every tooth. 10+ hideous burny nappies a day, dribbling and bf like a demon. We used metanium.

AnotherStitchInTime · 14/10/2014 21:21

Teething I reckon.

Someone on here gave some very good advice for nappy rash, I will try to remember it.

Firstly do not use wipes or cotton wool and water for wee nappies, just change. This leaves the barrier protecting the skin in place. Every time you use wipes or cotton wool and water you strip layers of already fragile skin.

Use emollient in the bath, pat dry or air dry and then use an emollient cream after. Then place a good layer of barrier cream, Metanium, Sudocrem, Bepanthen, Orabase will all do.

For poo nappies use baby oil and cotton wool to wipe off without removing barrier.

This gives the skin underneath a chance to recover.

DD1 did this at 7 months. It was adenovirus. I thought it was due to solids. She pooed every 2 hours day and night for 21 days...and we use cloth nappies! She did spike a high temp 39.6 about 10 days in.

Misty9 · 14/10/2014 21:29

My 6 month old has had this too for a few days now, but although her bits are red, she doesn't seem in pain so I've just left it. We've just sstarted solids so I'm wondering whether there's a sensitivity somewhere.

The thing to watch for is dehydration, other than that all you can do is treat the nappy rash and keep feeding.

Trinpy · 14/10/2014 23:03

Thanks for that advice Another, very, very helpful. I've actually given up on nappies during the day as it was such a waste. Have just been stripping him off to a tshirt and letting him roll around on some old towels, then I can put them straight in the wash when they get dirty. The baby oil tip is genius.

I will keep an eye on temp, etc, just in case there's something else going on.

People whose babies had this when they were teething: how long did it last for?

No more than a week

Trinpy · 15/10/2014 09:58

Thank god! Grin
He woke up at 4am this morning, did a poo, then weed all over the changing table, so full outfit change. Then back to bed for a bfeed followed by another poo, followed by another feed. It went on until 5.30! Shock. I'm shattered!
