I think mine - boy - has a few too many, although I'm definitely not a fashion addict by proxy with him. He gets bought lots by GPs and other relatives. I'm trying to encourage them to ease off a bit.

In his current size for clothes and shoes he has:

  • 4 jackets (2 warm and padded, 2 thinner waterproof types)
  • 1 pair waterproof trousers
  • 1 pair everyday shoes, 1 pair wellies and 1 pair plimsolls
  • 4 pairs PJs, 2 gro bags and 2 dressing gowns
  • 20 pairs trousers (jeans, jogging bottoms, cords mixture)
  • 1 gilet and 3 thick zip cardigans
  • 20 or so long sleeve tops
  • 20 or so t shirts
  • 10 warm jumpers (mixture of fleeces and knits)
  • 10 'smart' shirts & jumpers
  • 15 pants
  • 10 vests

Is this an excessive wardrobe or about right?

Wow! It does sound like a lot to me.

Not sure on DS' exact amounts - he's 6 but has had roughly the same amount of clothes since he was in normal clothes rather than baby clothes, so this is an estimate.

t-shirts - 10, 12 ish
long sleeved t-shirts - 4
smart shirts - 2. Never ever ever get worn.
trousers - about 8, between sizes currently.
shorts - 5/6
jumpers/hoodies etc - 2 that ever get worn. 3 or 4 more which don't.
coat - 1 (though we live somewhere warmer than UK, so he usually wears a jumper)
pjs - 3 long sleeve, 2 short sleeve, 1 just pj bottoms. Usually sleeps in pants Hmm
vests - 7
pants - about 14
socks - 8 pairs, need more, always running out.
shoes - everyday shoes, sandals, wellies, crocs for kindergarten, slippers.

TBH I couldn't store much more, we live in a small house. And he is obsessed with clothes and likes to rifle through everything at once, so I'm glad he doesn't have too much stuff in his drawers. It's enough to keep rotated through the wash and everything gets worn.

DS has far to many clothes his birthday is shortly after xmas and ended up with loads then MIL bought him a whole lot for summer. He gets so much from family for xmas and birthday the last 2 years i've only bought him his shoes and winter jacket pants socks and vests.

1 winter jacket
1 pair of boots 1 trainers
8 jeans
3 joggys
15 tshirts
10 long sleeve tops
4 jumpers
6 zippers
2 gillets
2 water proof jackets
1 snowsuit
4 vests
10 pants
8 socks
3 shirts
5 shorts

DS isn't a messy child he usually only has one outfit a day so it's been a lot especially the zippers/coats/jackets he has a stupid amount. He doesn't need so many tops or shorts.

that is loads! Did you buy them all, or are there hand-me-downs in there?

I like to have a good amount of clothes for DD as I can't be doing with having to stick on a wash every day, so I have enough for a week and a bit extra. It's a combo of stuff I buy (mainly Sainsbo's but a bit of JL, H&M) and hand-me-downs from a couple of other people.

DD is 4 but this is fairly similar to what she would have at 2 (oh, and at 2 I always double-bibbed to make stuff last longer - muslin under a pelican bib):

about 6 pairs of leggings
2 pairs of jeans (hand-me-downs, she doesn't like jeans or trousers much)
2 pairs of trousers (last year's0
about 8 long sleeved tops
3 skirts
a range of dresses, mainly hand-me-downs and summer ones, only one new this autumn
1 winter coat
1 raincoat
4 jumpers (only one new)
several cardies, either a few years old or hand-me-downs
vests, pants, socks, tights
3 pairs of gloves
2 pairs of shoes and a pair of wellies

she doesn't have school uniform so this is for every single day.

MaMaPo · 14/10/2014 11:49

Loads and loads. MIL expresses joy and love through the purchase of clothes.

bronya · 14/10/2014 11:54

Shoes, slippers, lace up boots and wellies - all used regularly for their intended purpose.

8x trousers, 8x jumpers, about 20x T-shirts, 10x pants, 10x socks.

He has two pairs of welly socks, full waterproofs, thermals and two warm coats also. Very necessary for walking the dog & 'helping' with the horses.

CactusSeven · 14/10/2014 12:09

Mine is 3 and has lots of clothes, though they are mostly hand-me downs; she is wearing stuff that fits and stuff that is still a bit too big, that I thought I might as well start using rather than have it waiting in storage bags for her to grow into, so she has at least twice as much as DD1 had at the same age.

She has: 7 pairs of trousers, 3 pairs of leggings, lots of dresses and skirts, loads and loads of long and short sleeved t shirts, 3 jumpers, 4 cardigans, 3 pairs of pjs, innumerable pants, vests, socks and tights. One dressing gown.

Quite a lot of coats Blush - two gilets one thick, one lightweight, one thin packable waterproof coat, one cotton lined waterproof coat, one fleece lined waterproof coat, one padded winter coat, one thick padded waterproof winter coat, four light summer jackets, two fleece jackets.

One thin pair of waterproof trousers, one fleece lined pair.
Wellies, another pair of slightly bigger wellies with fleece welly liners, and trainers.

I have a coat obsession! But we can go out in all weathers (especially rain!)

minipie · 14/10/2014 14:45

Wow! I need to show this to DH to prove DD doesn't actually have that many clothes Grin

DD is nearly 2 and has:

1 coat (last winter's which still fits, hooray)
6 long sleeve vests
6 short sleeve vests
About 6/7 long sleeve T shirts and blouses
4 pairs trousers
1 pair shorts
3 skirts
4/5 dresses
5 pairs socks
1 pair shoes
1 pair wellies
1 pair slippers
5 cardigans/jumpers
3 sets of PJs
2 gro bags

She also has a few things in 18-24 month which still fit but she will outgrow them any minute (and they're summer wear too) so not sure they count.

Her stuff is a mix of new and charity shop, sadly we don't get many hand me downs. We are having another DD so I reckon that justifies the expenditure a bit more Smile

RoganJosh · 14/10/2014 14:51

We're about the same as you. Except:
Only two coats
Two smart tops
A few less tshirts and trousers.

BertieBotts · 14/10/2014 15:54

How do you get away with only 5 pairs of socks? Or does she wear tights most days?

TarkaTheOtter · 14/10/2014 16:01

Mine has a lot too, but she's in between 2-3 and 3-4 sizes so it won't last long. A lot of her clothes are second hand and there are a lot she doesn't wear because I don't like them much. It's useful when we go on holiday though.

Artandco · 14/10/2014 16:04

A fair amount. Roughly 10 of each trousers/ tshirts/ shirts and jumpers. 5 coats ( different seasons), 10 shoes , lots of underwear.

Tbf that's between x2 children as they wear same size even though year apart. They generally share clothes and just have own shoes etc

heymammy · 14/10/2014 16:18

Ds is 2.6, his wardrobe seems rammed but the whole top rail is stuff that he has yet to grow into. I buy stuff in the sale and stash it. So current stuff he is wearing:

1 x wellies, shoes and boots
12ish short sleeved t shirts
6-8 long sleeved tshirts
6/7 jeans/jogging bottoms
2 hoody type tops
1 cardi although that's getting small
2 rain jackets
1 winter coat that's not been used yet
10+ pants as he's potty training
8 pairs socks

I'm not buying vests this year, I'll just layer him up with s/sleeved then l/sleeved top.

I do like to buy clothes for all the dc so have really had to rein myself in. I was all chuffed last week when I remembered that dd2 already had a warm coat from last year that still fitted (desperately wanted to buy a new one though Wink). Disclaimer...I never ever pay full price for anything!

minipie · 14/10/2014 16:20

She does wear tights a lot (I left off tights!) but thinking about it it's probably more than 5 pairs... I was thinking about the ones in the drawer and forgetting the ones in the wash!
