Cat nap or bedtime after nursery?

11mo DS started nursery a couple weeks ago, 8-6 Mon-Fri. At home, he usually had 2 naps a day and 3-4 hour wake times. But at nursery, most of the children are a bit older than him and only nap once, after lunch, so that's the pattern he's falling into there.

The problem is I'm not quite sure what to do when I pick him up. It's only a 5 minute walk to the nursery (which generally is super!), but it also means he can't naturally get a cat nap on the way home. So far, I've gone for a bit of a walk with him in the sling on the way home just so he gets a nap. It does feel a bit silly, though. We end up walking 6-6:30, then he wakes up for a snack and maybe 15 minutes of play time, before we start his bedtime routine at 7 and have lights out around 7:30.

I suppose it makes sense to work toward coming straight home, giving him a snack, and then starting his bedtime routine. So far at nursery, he usually wakes from his post-lunch nap around 1-1:30, so he's pretty tired when I pick him up at 6.

I worry that he will wake too early in the morning, though. Ideally, he would sleep until 7am, but so far doesn't seem too interested in sleeping more than 11 hours overnight. But maybe that would change with only the one day nap and no cat nap after nursery. Plus, I think it might start helping that it doesn't get light so early in the morning anymore.

Sorry for the essay Blush

Any advice? Around this age, did your LO cat nap on the way home from nursery and have a later bedtime, or did they go straight to bed when they got home? (Or did they just nap better at nursery than DS? Wink)

I would say give early bedtime a shot and see how it goes, he might surprise you.

My DS however has never slept more than 11 hours at night.

My DS started nursery at 12 months, and it was definitely a bit early for him to drop down to one nap then. As a result on nursery days he was super tired but if I tried a cat nap he would have never slept at night!

Instead I fed him dinner as soon as we got in, played for a bit and then got him in bath at 6.30, asleep for 7pm. He did wake up early then too which didn't help his tiredness!

On the days with me I'd still give him 2 naps and he was fine with this. I think it helped him catch up on sleep.

Once he was about 13 months though and on the days with me, he started fighting the pm nap so we gave in and moved to just one post lunch nap a day. He would sleep for 3 hours if I let him! But I now wake him after 1.5 hours so as not to affect his night sleep.

He's 19 months now and sleeps 7.45 to 7am (or after, most mornings I have to wake him if he's not awake by 7.10am).

I would wait until the clocks go back before making any plans. You may find it makes it clearer.

DS (12mo) naps less at nursery so we bring his bed time forward as he really needs to catch up on sleep. His home pattern is 7pm bed, wake at 6.30, but on nursery days we have him in bed by 6.30. And it definitely doesn't make him wake earlier. Today, for example (after nursery yesterday) he slept in til 7.45!

My daughter is nearly a year old, she started nursery when she was 10.5 months, and also started to move towards a routine of just one nap a day. She tends to wake up around 7am (although can be anything from 6am to 7:20, she really varies), naps at nursery from around 12-1:30, or sometimes a little later. I collect her around 5pm, we have a little play and sometimes a snack when we get home, then she goes in the bath around 6:15, and milk then bed by 6:45pm.

It is often reported that an earlier bedtime can equate to a later rising time in the morning, and is suggested sometimes for parents whose babies are waking super early in the morning. Try a slightly earlier bedtime for a few days, see what happens.

Thanks all, we'll try having bedtime earlier rather than the cat nap, either next week or after the clocks go back Smile

(And yep, on the weekends, so far DS still has two naps.)

Our post nursery routine is a conveyor belt of snack (eg toast), bath, cuddle & cbeebies for half an hour or so then bed. Asleep by 6.45pm
