Toddler sick once. Okay for nursery tomorrow?

Ugh. My poor DD who is 2.5 was sick this evening at 5:30pm. Basically she did not want dinner and then got sick (must have been all her lunch!). ICK! Sorry, I have a vomiting phobia. Not easy with young kids! Anyway, I obviously did not give her any more food and gave her water slowly...just small sips at a time every 30 mins until she went to bed. She managed to keep all the water down and thankfully has not been sick since that one time at 5:30pm. She seemed okay after, as she was watching cartoons and asking for her milk (did not give just in case) and she asked for water many times, which I gave in small amounts. She was smiling, took a bath and seemed fine. She even said she felt better. However, at 2.5 years...its hard to tell! Is she okay to go to nursery tomorrow if she seems fine in morning or do I keep her home just in case?

No, keep her off.

McBear · 30/09/2014 21:58

Officially you should keep her off. If you genuinely don't think it's a bug and she isn't putting other kids at risk, I used to send dd in.

No, home for 48 hours

I'd keep her off. In my experience my kids often have a bug they are sick once, I catch it = vomit for 12 hours. Rule off thumb is off nursery /school 24 hrs for vomiting and 48 for diarrhoea just incase to limit spreading it

Charlilou490 · 30/09/2014 22:00

No! She hasn't had any food since vomiting so you do not know if she is ok!
Please keep her off, it isn't fair to the other children or the staff that care for you child, to risk them catching a bug.

Clobbered · 30/09/2014 22:01

No, it's really not OK for her to go to nursery. Parents thinking "it'll be OK, she's only been sick once" are responsible for the rapid spread of so many of these bugs in nurseries. Please do the right thing and keep her off tomorrow.

Okay, will keep her home. I was not sure. I hope she is okay tomorrow. I will make sure to start her off with little water and the BRAT diet. Banana, rice, apple sauce and toast. And SLOWLY as well! To make sure her tummy has time to heal and can tolerate the food.

My philosophy is that if they caught it from nursery, they'll be safe. I'd never send an ill child or put another child at risk. My dd had a habit of just being sick and then being fine.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I will keep her home tomorrow to monitor! Praying and crossing fingers it was a one off!! Especially since we are going to France this weekend for a wedding and she is the flower girl!!!

I expect the issue is not just whether they are sick again making it more contagious but that even if they arent it takes a day or 2 to stop being contagious.

Okay, well I kept her home and had our nanny come for the day since I am not feeling well either. Luckily my daughter has been okay since. We started w water and then diluted juice...slowly and then pieces of banana and toast for breakfast. She kept asking for more of everything and talk about all the foods she wanted to eat. But I kept telling her we have to slow down and eat little by little to make sure her tummy is okay. She had two small bowls of chicken soup and rice that I made for her for lunch....I am hoping she keeps it down and is okay. Both kids are taking a nap and I am resting. My daughter has been playing and acting normal. I hope it was just the one off! We leave to France for the weekend on Friday and she is a flower girl at a wedding on sat so I HOPE SHE IS 100% better by Friday. She already seems like it...but obviously hard to tell and need to take it slow with her. She does not have nursery again until Monday so that should be fine for her to go back by then.

It sounds like something she ate at lunch disagreed with her. One-off vomit + six hours after last food usually = food poisoning. I'd keep her off milk for a bit though or switch to Lacto-Free as this can cause a repeat of vomiting.
