How much should newborn wear?

It's quite warm here at the moment - 22 degrees, and I'm not sure how many layers I should be putting my newborn in. Is a vest and a sleepsuit too much? That's what the hospital told us to put her in, but think it was a bit cooler, and it seems like a lot to me Blush feel embarrassed to ask, but there are no guidelines anywhere!

That's what I put my newborn in and it was baking in the hospital! Babies lose a lot if heat from their bodies so that should be fine.

I was told they need the same as you plus one extra layer, which can be clothing or a blanket. DS was quite sweaty though so ended up having the same as me. He's 17 months now and I still do the same.

One more layer than you is the rule of thumb...

Both my newborns (born June and July) had jaundice - with #2 DH stripped him down to his nappy and took him out to bask in the sun at 3 days old. It was about 22 degrees or so. He was fine :)

Both of mine also really hated being hot, so I ended up putting them in onesies as standard with an optional cardigan or jumper on top. I found out that the babies were hot because after exhausting the hungry/pooey/sleepy options, clothing removal made them stop squealing! I think it's easier to have fewer layers but heavier ones, too, because then it's simpler to change them in the event of a poo explosion.

Also, snowsuits are a godsend as winter approaches because they're so easy to put on (and see above re simplicity in event of a poo explosion).
