Fun weekend activities

It might just be in my area but there are so many things on during the week (rhyme time etc) but absolutely nothing at the weekend!

I'm back at work and really miss the music classes I did with my DD. They broke up the day when I was on maternity leave and I really enjoyed sharing the time with her.

Aside from soft play, there doesn't appear to be anything to do at the weekend. We go to the park, try to do activities at home but it would be great to be able to take her to a class every now and then.

I think it would also be nice for grandparents to share the

Is it just my area or everywhere?

Have you checked the library and your children's centre? One of our local Children's centre do some classes on a Saturday, though not every Saturday. Our library also has Storytime for under 5s on a Saturday morning.

Thanks, the only thing I've found is a monthly Dad's story time at a nearby library. That's it! On weekends like this, it's great to be out and plenty to do in parks etc.

Massive gap in the market I think!

How old is she? Could you start a swimming class together?
Try local museums?
National Trust places sometimes have kids' activities at weekends.
Ask on MN Local?

I find things stop at weekends too. So, I save a few things for weekends to give us plenty of interesting things to do. Things I do at weekends are:-

  • swimming
  • excursion to a particularly excellent park with picnic during summer and lunch in a cafe in winter
  • long walk with dogs (tip: you don't need dogs!). DD (19mo) goes in the sling on my back. We have had particularly good fun with scoffing blackberries all the way round recently.
  • I go to the library on Saturday mornings to return my library books. DD really enjoys just going there and we read a few books in the children's section and then take a few out for her too.
  • on rainy days we still go out to the park. DD has her waterproof all-in-one and wellies so it's puddle-jumping for an hour or so.
  • seaside (we live quite close)
  • we used to go to soft play on Saturday mornings with my friend but as she's just had her second DD we're taking a few weeks off.
  • if I'm really desperate I'll jump in the car and visit relatives.

It can be a challenge to find things to do, but I keep an eye on the 'Whats On' section of the local newspapers and make good use of country shows, dog shows, visiting fun fairs etc.

Is she too young for a ballet class?

Stars66 · 29/09/2014 14:32

We do swimming lessons at the mo, but am aware of other classes around like little kickers, tots rugby, baby ballet and movers and shakers.
I depends on where you are?

FlipFlopWaddle · 29/09/2014 14:33

Local to me are:
Gymnastics pay as you go sessions from age 1, local gymnastics club
Rhymetime, stories and crafts at a few libraries
Craft sessions at the museum (not every week but at least once a month)
Swimming lessons
Ballet lessons

Look into what your local leisure centres, museums and pools offer, as well as dance and sports clubs

Thanks so much for the messages. DD is 14 months and just about getting the hang of walking! But will look into ballet as she gets older.

I'm in yummy mummy central in north london so it does seem a bit odd that there's not much in the way of organised activities at the weekend (but an plethora of options in the week). We are lucky enough to have some lovely woods, which we visit often. She also has an all-in-one waterproof which gets us out whatever the weather!

I suppose as she gets older, there will be more open to us, like ballet, etc. Maybe I'm just missing the silly music classes that we used to do when I was on mat leave. I'm sure DD is coping perfectly well without them.

It sounds like I'm not too far from you... Google Movers and Shakers, it's a music class with songs, signing and puppets.

StepfauxWife · 01/10/2014 08:45

Thanks Stars66, yes I think we must be nearby! We used to go to Movers & Shakers when I was off but they don't appear to do weekends.

Maybe the answer is to work part time!
