cloth nappies and nappy rash

my dd2 has been in cloth since birth and like most people I love them but just recently she's developed a terrible nappy rash that even bleeds sometimes. Used sudocream and various other creams to no avail.
I ended up using disposabless while on holidays and he rash completely healed up. However since coming home and back into cloth her nappy rash has come back worse than ever.

What can I do to get back into cloth without the terrible nappy rash

btw use meos and wee notions pocket nappy at night

Could she be allergic to washing powder? Could have developed allergy over time.
Try different liners?

Flamesparrow · 26/09/2006 15:37

First question... how old is she?

Without that, I will just go with the basic - give em all a very hot wash (as hot as it will allow) first with, then without powder to kill off anything nasty lurking.

Bepanthen is good for mild rash, and drapolene for the nasty kind.

Chamomile and honey soaked silk liners are amazing too - always healed DD overnight.

Fancy seeing you here Flame !

Tis a very unusual section to see me in...

Teeth and weaning could be doing interesting things to her body, leading to more rash. I know mine are more prone to it with teething, although it does happen in both disposables and cloth for me (or it did for DD, not tried DS in disps).

Is she in cloth at night? If she is you could try a disposible at night. My dd is in cloth & it does make her prone to fungal nappy rashes so some canestan on at night might help too. I find metanium is the best for nipping rash in the bud too.

I use the same pownder on her clothes and she hasn't developed any rashes anywhere else..
at the moment I'm just using fleece liners

it may not be the type of powder but residue trapped in the nappy. If you think with clothes they are one layer and rinse thro easily but something with 3-4 layers (or sometimes even 7!!!) the rinse cycle might not get everything out. You can find out by watching the rinse cycle and seeing if there are any suds at the end of it. If there are then keep rinsing til they're all gone and see if that helps.

All good suggestions - def rinse out nappies well, using silk bourette liners is a great solution, and also not using nappy wipes, especially supermarket ones with alcohol in.

I have my fella nappy-free for 1/2 hour a day by sitting him on a terry or prefold (or towel) in his high chair when he's having breakfast. Accidents are caught in the terry, and he's strapped in so can't "spread the word" over the carpet. It's a good way to get nappy-free time.

If you do try silk bourette then you need to hand wash them - not nice but it's worth it!

I find that after a night in a nappy and wool soaker/shorties any redness/soreness that was there is gone. I think it's because the wool allows my dd's little bum to 'breathe' at night.

both my kids have supersensitive skin and do get nappy rash easily. have tried all the usual stuff-rinsing etc. silk liners made it worse, sorry-couldn't do proper hot rinse on them

i've ended up using disosables (tushies) at the first sign of a rash, and also giving them lots of nappy free time (hard wood floors ). I mean like half the day. They do need it, otherwise they get sore.

Plus they have maybe 2 baths, with oil, a day.

It's horrible when they have bleeding skin like that. I think my DS was nine or ten months when he had his worst-ever nappy rash, which exactly coincided with his first tooth.
As you describe it his bum was red and the sores were raw and weeping, particularly two on his bum just below his peepee.
I actually used some stuff from Boots which was like 'New Skin', it just forms a seal over the open sore and allows it to heal. We stripped our nappies by washing with no soap them until there were no bubbles in the water - took about three washes. After that we changed to eco-balls from Lakeland and a splash of white vinegar in the rinse to restore the PH to acid - like your baby's skin.
I have read that the residual powder in the nappies can react with urine, which is the difference between soap on clothing and in nappies. And any contact with faeces will make the rash much much worse.
I recommend washing with lots of warm water and a flannel - standing in the sink after nappy changes. plenty of nappy free time (put down and old sheet or towels) and a mixture of bepanthan and metanium.
Oh and change the nappies really frequently like every couple of hours.
Prefolds are handy at times like this because they dry fast and you can buy 6 of them quite cheaply.
We tried Kamillosan and found that DS was allergic, so do a patch test, it's quite strong.
Chamomile tea is nice applied after changing as well. Even in a cup for a baby to drink it's good at relieving pain, and keep up the fluids, it does help a bit.
It will probably pass, but it's horrible when it's happening.
I hope there's something in there that you can use and big hugs to your baby. :0)
