Smelly nappies

I've been using cloth nappies for over a year but in the last few weeks they've really started to reek of ammonia as soon as he wees (and he's a thirsty boy so wees a lot). I'm guessing it's built up over time, but any ideas how to neutralise it?

are you sure its the nappies to blame and not somehting in his diet? is he drinking enough?

otherwise try giving them a wash on the really hot cycle (naughty naughty) and seing does that help any

He drinks loads but I don't notice a smell when he has a disposable on. Have used tea tree but will give white vinegar a whirl, thanks

Is he teething? DD'a nappies are smelling REALLY strong just now and she's teething. Happened with her first teeth too.

I found that changing from soappowder to ecoballs on a 50 or 60 degree wash, with a splash of white vinegar in the final rinse drastically reduced nappy smells. This particularly worked for hemp, which really doesn't do well with soap powder.
I also hear that soapnuts are great for nappies.
If your nappies are all white then you can add a scoop of oxiclean or ecover laundry bleach every so often to keep them bright.
I find you don't need to do that for coloured or unbleached, which look better without the washing powder because they aren't so faded.
Also an outside line the odd time can help fresh air and the effects of the sun (if there is any ) can really help.
Oh and the drinking water thing does make a difference, not so much juice which I have noticed makes my DS's pee a bit stronger smelling (potty training just now - help)
Oh and one final thing, wool wraps can help reduce the smell during the day, the ammonia is neutralised to some degree by the wool.
hope there's something in there for you.

Teething does horrible horrible things to nappies. Less powder, extra rinses, vinegar, and as much sunlight as possible seems to help.

Thanks alot - I'm trying the white vinegar tonight...good luck with the potty training; I don't think I'll be there for a while as ds likes sitting in poo...

I mentioned this on another thread but residue buildup can cause this smell. Try stripping the nappies in a 60 degree wash with no powder and then rinse twice and see if that helps.
