Painful wind (farts!) in breast fed 10 week old

Hi all

I wonder if anyone has any experiences they can share.

My DD is 10 weeks old and exclusively breast fed (on demand if that's relevant). She's a very happy, smiley little soul but has suffered on and off from colic since she was about 3 weeks old.

It seemed to get better between weeks around 7 and 9 but this week it has come back with a vengeance. She will be happily sleeping or playing or just laying and suddenly will scream blue murder, tense her whole body, her belly will go hard and after 3-5 minutes will do a big fart, sometimes with a bit of poo too. These farts and the poo smell quite pungent. Not pooey exactly but sort of "off" of that makes sense. Her usual poos don't smell much.

In this last week she has also come up with horrible nappy rash that's inflamed and bleeding. She doesn't have a temperature. I took her to the doctor and she said it's just colic and to treat the nappy rash with Canestan. I am doing, as well as using pampers sensitive, cleaning her bottom with cammomile tea and cotton will and having lots of nappy off time. It's tough to change her every single time she poos as she's one of those BF babies who poos constantly. If I change her after 30mins or 2mins there's poo in there, so I aim for once an hour in the day and if she wakes at night.

As for the colic I have variously tried infacol, dentinox colic drops, gripe water, Colief and given her calpol when she's been clearly in agony (on the GPs recommendation and no more than twice a day of 25ml). None of these do much, apart from the calpol which sends her to sleep which doesn't seem like an ideal solution.

Any miracle cures for this type of colic? Is it even colic? Any ideas/experiences welcome.

This sounds much like my dd at that age. In our case, the colic (all day, not just evening), tummy pains, explosive pungent poo, nappy rash and poor sleep were caused by cows milk allergy. She was reacting to it via.my breastmilk. I cut out dairy and she improved.

It sounds like she's getting a bit constipated (stinky wind and poo). Some years ago now (bloody 'ell, it's 10 years now!) my baby suffered constipation and painful wind. The MW showed me a foot massage thing to help - if you google 'baby foot massage for constipation'. you'll get You Tube videos on it. I was most sceptical, but it got baby DD1 pooing after 8 days with no poo! And if it doesn't work, at least your baby's had a nice foot rub Smile

no advice on the colic but if the nappy rash is bleeding then go back to cool water and cotton. wool and use a muslin or towel to pat her dry thoroughly before you put a nappy on. also cover the nappy rash in cornflour over night - it sounds daft but the doctors gave me a doze. different creams when dd was ill and hers was awful but none worked, 24 hrs after being told about cornflour and it had almost completely healed over

Classic colic is 3 hours solid in the evening which starts around 7-11pm. She could well be reacting to something you are eating - milk is the classic one as well as cheese?

had similar with my youngest.I cut out anything remotely spicy and especially garlic. Really helped. There used to be a good bf reference site called Kellymom. Good luck!

Did you try cutting out dairy from your diet? I have and noticed a big improvement after 2 weeks. It takes a long time for the protein to leave your and baby's body. Also, if you do, watch for hidden dairy in ingredients, not just obvious like milk or cheese. I use 'Pure' spread and kara coconut milk for coffee and cereal. It doesn't mean your lo is allergic, but sometimes ehen they are little it does make some babies colicky.

Metan i um I found good for nappy rash and I also did the cornflour in the nappy and it did help.

McFox · 20/09/2014 20:45

If you crush up some dried camomile flowers and mix it through the cornflour it's even better.

I also ended up going dairy-free while breast feeding both my DSs. I didn't need to be really strict about it, I still had butter and products that had a tiny amount of milk as an ingredient, but any milky, creamy or cheesy foods seemed to cause problems for my DSs for their first few months.

I gradually tried reintroducing dairy into my diet when they were around 6 months ish and tried them on dairy around 7-8 months with no ill effects.

Since making the connection myself, I've now heard a lot of "anecdotal evidence" about removing dairy stopping colicky symptoms in babies.

Best of luck finding something that helps to improve things for your DD. Thanks

Oh, Weleda calendula nappy cream cleared my LO's bad rash in one night when everything else failed.
