pull up nappies to toilet train - yay or nay?

Nursery have asked that DS starts wearing them. He's 2.1. He been using the potty before bedtime bath at home for a couple of weeks now and he's also managed a wee on the potty a few other times - he's asked for the potty on those occasions. He's also done two poos on the potty when I've noticed him start
to go and I've got him to the potty in time. I've kept nursery posted on progress and today they've asked me to start putting him in pull ups and they'll keep offering him the chance to use the potty / toilet through the day. He did a wee on the potty at nursery today. But having done a bit of research, it seems that opinions are divided on pull ups. Help!

Nay here! Our nursery hated them..

I was surprised that they asked for them tbh.

I did use them but only as ds started training under the age of 2 and it was easier when out and about as they pull up and down. Once he was ok with holding on until he got to the toilet while wearing pull ups I put him in pants.

Maybe they are just taking it slowly but find it is easier with pull up nappies and it doesnt matter so much if he has an accident.

p.s. I used normal pull up nappies rather than the pull up toilet training ones

No here too. When DD was ready I took a week off work, and toilet trained then, by the time she was back at nursery, I just took in a few pairs of pants and a stash of leggings. She only ever had a couple of accidents.

PookBob · 16/09/2014 19:44

I had an emergency stash of pull ups for long (30 min plus) car journeys and similar, other than that, straight into pants.

For my kids, not for me!

DS was in them from 17mo til 2 years I thought they were good we called them big boy pants and he would tell me when he wanted to go if he missed i'd still sit him on the loo and go through the motions he gradually stopped needing them as he held it longer though he's still not great at holding on long at 2.5.

I think it's when you use them as a nappy and not a training aid they can be a problem a friend used to say to her DS if they were in the car for example just go in your pull up so her child learned if it's not convenient to go to the bathroom just use the pull up, she told me when DS went into them she wished she'd never said it so I started off with the idea that we act like they are pants if he needs to pee in the middle of asda we would abandon the trolley and go even though he had the pull up on. It worked really well for us Ds was mentally ready but not physically he couldn't have went right into pants.

No pull ups, they really are just nappies. Your DS won't differentiate between how it feels to have pull ups on or nappies. It's just confusing. If DS is ready then he won't need them.

We use pull ups at home, but in nursery she started potty training with normal pants! It's the second week and she has not had one accident at nursery! Knock wood. She is 2.5 and I guess ready. At home she has an accident maybe every other day in her pull up, which is pretty good considering we just began potty training last week. I do think they learn faster with pants.

elQuintoConyo · 16/09/2014 21:24

We didn't use them, I think they're an expensive scam.

DS was naked a lot and we put him on the potty every twenty minutes or so. Very few accidents and, luckily, a bladder of steel! It took three days.

He peed his pants once and didn't like the feeling of it, very different to peeing in a nappy.

Good luck OP!

StarMeKitten · 16/09/2014 21:45

Didnt work for my DD at all as if felt like a normal nappy so we just put her in pants at 2.3 and we'd cracked it in a few weeks.
I did use them at night for a few months though to do the night training as I used to get her up to have a 'try' when me and dh went to bed. We had the nights done by 2.6 so it seemed to work for that!
Good luck!

I used for that period when introducing to the potty/toilet to make easy to get down and back up, but once proper training we dumped in favour of proper pants as pull ups are basically still nappies and many children won't fully get dry until they are in proper pants as they don't experience accidents/wetness in the same way.

ireallyshouldgeton · 17/09/2014 15:11

Would washable nappies be a good, midway alternative to the pull ups? Are they less absorbent than disposables so 'feel' more wet to the child? Just wondering as I could probably borrow some from somewhere for a few weeks if so.
