DS is suffering from nappy rash, think that reusable wipes might be solution. Where is the best place to buy them from and how do you keep them moist?

buy cheap face cloths

either just run them under the tap when you need them or put them in a plastic food box and pour camomile tea, a drop or two of lavender oil, and a squirt of baby oil over them

i like pieces of fleeece... 1 fleece throw for about £3 max can be cut into wipe sized pieces...

it also wont fray so you just cut and get on with it

they can be washed at any temperature in the washing machine with any other stuff, and dry within of coming out of the machine!

(I use tiny pieces of fleece instead of cotton wool for my self as well!, and i used an old jumper to make my tiny pieces!)

I use cotton wipes with just water andthey aregreat.

I like the idea of having them ready when I need them though. If I put them wet flannels/fleece in a plastic food container wont they get that horrible mildewy smell?

I have a little spray bottle for when I'm out, most places you can just wet them under a tap though.

I normally use Cotton Bottoms ones bought cheap off ebay and some cheap face flannels too. The Cotton Bottoms are a sort of brushed cotton with an overlocked edge, fine for little wees.

I wet them just before use under nearest tap - you have to remember to do this before starting to change baby. If it's infection you're worried about I definitely wouldn't leave them festering and damp all day.

If DS's have bad nappy rash I sometimes use baby oil (gotta find some use for it), read somewhere it's a bit more soothing on the broken skin - think sunburn. This might be total rubbish though and I'm sure someone will correct me.

I actually use disposable wipes when I'm out, I just found there's enough stuff in the changing bag as it is. Compromise. But as it's only a few I can indulge in really nice Huggies ones.

BTW Metanium has cleared up nappy rash every time for my two.

I have a plastic tub that I use, I have 3 or 4 wipes in there at a time and tip cold camomile tea over them. They get used up quite qickly so no chance to go mouldy!

Will be honest and admit I also use disposable wipes more often then the reuseables, purely out of laziness and I am trying to get better

ohbother · 26/09/2006 19:42

they won't go mouldy if you just put enough in for a day

horsemadgal · 26/09/2006 19:42

Ikea face cloths here.

um....

wet toilet paper when out

um....

have caused much in the past but dont like the chemicals in wipes.

though they are fab for getting ink stains off t shirts.

bobsmum · 26/09/2006 19:49

I've got a mix of WAHM reusable wipes from Ella's House and NappiesbyMinki.

I keep them in a tupperware tub about the size of an ice cream tub.

I make a solution of a squirt of non scented baby lotion (Simple Baby atm, but looking for some SLS free ones if anyone can recommend ) and a few drops of tea tree oil in boiling water.

I found water alone wasn't getting all the waxy poo residue off and leaving a layer of orange on dd's bum - eurgh.

FillyjonktheBananaEater · 26/09/2006 20:17

oh dear, no, that doesn't sound pleasent

hmmm, never had that problem. Have been fortunate indeed

(I do use hottish water...but anyway, my kids love baths and thats when I study, so they have upwards of 2 baths a day )

FillyjonktheBananaEater · 26/09/2006 20:18

whats the advantage of using lotion, btw, as opposed to SLS free (obv) olive oil? Curious here.

bobsmum · 26/09/2006 21:04

Olive oil? REally? Isn't that a bit slimy and more like a moisturiser rather than a cleanser? WOuld be more natural I spose, but does it really work?

Dragonhart · 26/09/2006 21:05

The nappy lady website has some good 'recipes' for things to wet your wipes with.

Def like the idea of using fleece though as I have fleece wipes and they are sooo soft.

NannyL · 30/09/2006 21:49

i think SLSis linked to asthma and eczma...

there are lots of chi;drens porducts that you can get in our big tesco extra... that are SLS free... and they smell SO yummy, like orange body wash and "a purple flavour" shampoo! that my charges use (but i cant remeber what the brand is called, sorry)

they smell so yummy and my charges excma is SO much better when she uses these products!

UniSarah · 30/09/2006 22:06

I keep a pot of water on change tabel

LittleB · 30/09/2006 22:10

Another vote for fleece wipes with a squirt of baby lotion. The chamomile with tea tree oil and water made her nappy rash worse, but sensitive baby lotion and fleece wipes work well. Have a plastic box with fleece wipes folded and small bottle of baby lotion to squirt on as needed. Work better than disposable wipes too.

mammaemma · 01/10/2006 10:41

I got an old large baby bath bottle and mixed in it water, baby bath, few drops tea tree, few drops lavender oil and some baby oil shake and keep then I bought a funky little kiddies lunch box which i keep downstairs with the reusable nappies and each day sticky my wipes in the lunchbox squeeze on enough of the solution then they are ready to use and they smell lovely. You can then use the same principle with a small wipes box when out and about. :-) Or use dry wipes and put some solution in a spray bottle give a quick spray and a wipe.
