7 week old baby

My seven week old baby seems to be quite "sicky".
He is sick at least once a day, and it seems like he can sometimes bring up a whole bottle ful. It doesn't seem to particularly bother him. He is putting on weight and seems otherwise ok.

Is this something to worry about, can I prevent it/minimise it and should it stop soon?

He is formula fed and usually takes about 6 ounces every 3/4 hours.

it could be reflux, it's generally nothing to worry about but worth keeping an eye on.

does he stop to wind part way through the bottle? sound obvious I know but my dd was also ff and if you took the bottle out to wind her she wouldn't finish it but it did mean there were occasions where she struggled to bring her wind up and when she did a lotion milk came with it!

I do wind him during his bottle. This does seen to help as when he is sick it is less than if I hadn't.

Is reflux not really serious? Does it make babies cry for hours at night?
When might he grow out of it if he has it?

Is there anything I could do about this do you think? I give him infacol to help get his wind up.

My dd grew out of it quite quickly but infacol helped, try propping him up when he sleeps by wither pooling some books under one end of his cot or by placing a pillow under the mattress to lift his head higher than his tummy as that helped dd too

as long as he is feeding and putting on weight there really isn't too much to worry about, it could also be colic if he is crying a lot as reflux shouldn't make him cry too much, but it is essentially acid indigestion so a quick call to your health visitor or gp wouldn't go wrong as they can prescribe infant gaviscon if it doesn't settle.

I know how terrifying baby being sick is (dd is my very pfb) and I panic over everything!

it will get better honest!

Bloody autocorrect! either popping x

Maybe he is drinking too fast, you could try a more 'upright' holding position when giving him a bottle. Try winding him twice during a feed. Sometimes there can be more than one burp so keep going. Are you using new born teats? Maybe the milk is coming out too fast.

My prem DS was very sicky as a young baby, but like your DS it never seemed to bother him, and he gained weight like a trooper.
One thing the outreach nurses suggested to me was to spill about 2 tablespoons of liquid on the worktop, and see how it looked like loads and loads - their point being that what seems to be a huge amount coming back up isn't often as much as you think.
We tried infant gaviscon for a bit (as a prem he was more prone to reflux), but it didn't really work. He grew out of it not that long after.
Not sure which formula you are on but a friend swore by aptamil anti reflux. You many not actually want to change your milk though if it isn't really bothering him - as long as your washing machine can keep up Wink

My DS was the same. Never seemed to bother him... He'd bring loads up then want more again straight away afterwards. He might be a particularly windy baby, at this age I had to wind him twice during a bottle to stop it coming up.

Other times I think he was just greedy and wanting too much!! So a dummy might help in that situation?

Also try some tea towels/a folded towel to put his mattress on an angle in his cot/crib/basket. Helps stop the voms at bedtime AND is also useful when they have blocked noses.

And buy more muslins!! And bibs!

Zara8 · 12/09/2014 11:05

Stopped at about 4/5 months - when he could move more and get the burps out on his own.

It was only when he started crawling that we could stop winding him completely....

Am due DC2 shortly and had forgotten about the endless winding until now.... Crap. Grin

tbh once a day isnt much. if it was reflux I would expect it at every/most feeds. And lots of crying. reflux isnt just about being sicky, its painful.

Some babies are just sicky. And will grow out of it.

meanwhile just always have a muslin with you and a change of clothes. Wink

If he's happy and putting on weight then I would say it's nothing to worry about. My DS was like that and he just grew out of it by about 6 months, maybe a bit older
