This afternoon I came out of a supermarket and noticed a sleeping toddler (around 18 months) alone in the car with the window only slightly open . asked person in the next car if they knew the driver . They don't and had been there for 10 minutes and not seen anyone come to or from the car.

reported to the supermarket who put a call out for the person to return to the car. lady comes out full trolley of shopping without a care in the world when questioned why she would think it's ok to leave a young child in the car when it was over 20 odd degrees ! was told it's nothing to do with us , what if something was wrong with him and he needed sleep ?! followed by me telling her if something had actually happened to her whilst she had left the child in a car with tinted windows he would most likely end up dead !

how do people think this is ok ?! she was gone Atleast 15 minutes , full trolley so likely longer Shock

Did nobody call the Police? I would have done, if only to get it recorded and a call made to SS.

I have taken note of her number plate and I have her address and phone number as it had their business advertised on their car !

I was going to say, "Oh I'm sure it's fine if they're just nipping back to the house for something they've forgotten or are just going to pay for petrol; I've been known to do this..." but I'm actually Shock that anyone would leave their young child, sleeping or not, in the car unattended for that length of time. Even if it's not hot, if it was November for instance, I wouldn't have thought that this was appropriate.
If you have the car reg and other details, then yes, report it. That shows a shocking lack of concern for their child, imo.

Definitely not ok! However I probably go too far the other way because I sit in the car with my kids if they are asleep on my own driveway

PartyFops · 11/09/2014 16:16

It must be reported, as Mumofboyo says its a shocking lack of concern for their child.

I leave my 2yo asleep in the car at home. I regularly check on her, and can see her most of the time. If it's hot I lwave windows and boot open. She's been in there an hour before. I wouldn't do it at a supermarket though.

My dad once found a baby in a car at the Malvern County Show - somewhere people go for a leisurely visit and wander, not a quick pop in and out again. It was a really hot day, and he decided to call the police.

They broke the car window, got the baby out and handed them to the paramedics who said he was maybe half an hour from death, maybe less.

The woman in the OP was an idiot.

Ok so I have reported it to the police for that area ( it's not my local area) they have taken all details and I had a phone number car registration and company advertised to hand for them . They said that it is a serious concern for the child. They will contact me with an update but said they would either go to the home or they may be taking it further than that

Well done s88. I'm Shock that someone would think it was ok to do that. Hot day or not. Evidently it's not just 'don't leave a dog in a hot car' that some people need to hear....doing your weekly shop whilst your child sleeps alone in the car...? Really? ((Shakes head in disbelief))

Givemecaffeine21 · 11/09/2014 20:13

Just watched the video on that link - harrowing!

mumofboyo · 11/09/2014 21:16

Well done op.
I find it astounding, as well as disgusting, that someone would leave their child in the car, alone, for that length of time. In the drive, next to the house, then fair enough but a supermarket car park? I shake my head.
I'm glad the police are taking it seriously.

Most of the time on MN when I see calls to 'report it' I want to roll my eyes at the complete over-reaction. Not in this case. You have done the right thing. Poor baby.
