Anyone else's MIL let LO's play with unsuitable toys????

We had sunday lunch in a pub and I was holding DS (9 months almost) as he was a bit bored. MIL sat opposite and suddenly I hear this noise so I look at what he is doing... he was rattling a set of keys dangerously close to his face and making marks in the table.. !!!! MIL was smiling and thought this was a great distraction. How anyone can think keys are suitable toys for a baby I don't know.
Also she bought him a Golliwog , which I have hidden at the bottom of his toy chest so it will never resurface again..

I took some especially vile books MIL bought dd to the charity shop the other day - I felt naughty & guily BUT it did feel GOOD.

Yeah but it has to be the set of keys you really need with your house, car etc on. An old set of keys kept especially for purpose of young babies will never do ime.

Babies of 9 months can't thrust and poke as an a woman can, so they are not going to be able to do the damage that we could do to an attacker with a key. Waving keys and sucking them is a fine activity.

A friend of mine's toddler used to like drinking the water in the toilet bowl! I was less horrified by that than by my cousin who I saw wiping her baby's hands with a wipe because he'd touched my 2 year old's (clean) bare foot

nicegalsses - you're spot on about the fact that babies LOVE your most important keys and not that set of old keys from your student flat that you forgot to return to your landlord. Why IS that???

MadamePlatypus · 22/09/2006 21:04

I think that if you attack somebody with keys you are supposed to hold them between your fingers like a knuckle duster.

kiskidee · 22/09/2006 21:15

keys will only hurt an attacker if the arm wielding the bunch of keys deliberately put enough well coordinated force behind them to scratch badly. you can put more force behind keys than you can behind fingernails - if they exist.

your child is as likely to maul himself with a bunch of keys as he is to deliberately starve himself.

MIL give my ds an ornamental tractor!!!!!!!!!!! And an ornamental sheep scene complete with farmer and sheep dog... DS was merrily bouncing this £80 ornament across the floor making "baa'ing" and "Bruuuum" noises before I actually twigged as to what she had done!!

archiesmummy · 22/09/2006 23:00

Had to go deal with awake DS and drunk (and very happy ) DH returning from pub.
badkarma, similar to my experience only I found out prior to DS playing with.. Mad!
You may all be right about the keys being harmless, but I still won't let MIL give him keys to play with. She won't be too offended as she thinks that most things I let DS do or don;t do are strange. When I tried explaining BLW to her she said: so you will never let him use a spoon??? FGS
Anyway off to watch telly

Haven't read all the posts on here but had to post this. My MIL wanted to buy DS1 (7) a pellet gun for xmas last and couldn't understand why 1) I said no and 2) was a little annoyed about it.

my dd loved keys when she was younger, i dont think id let her run around with them as yes that would seem dangerous but jsut sitting on my lap with them was nice distraction.

as for what someone said about germs earlier i totally agree, detol is bad bad bad. kids need germs for an immune system. my little dd grew up (till 3 month ago) living at my parents house (with me and dh) crawling round the floor with dog/cat hair, dirt dust etc (not so bad as, how clean is your house style) but not what you'd call clean.......shes never been ill as far as i remember, she gets far less colds than others her age and i htink its taught her not to put sticky hands on the floor and then in mouth! lol

sorry bit off subject!
