Any HV OR drs about... Baby off the chart!

I am worried about my friends baby. I am mostly worried because he hasn't seen a health professional since he was about 3.5 months old (and not been officially weighed since 10 days) so there is no one who is qualified to comment professionally as to whether his mum (or I) should be worried.

He is 6 months old and approx 15kg. Looking in my red book 10.5kg is 99th centile for 6 months. So he is now nearly 50% heavier than a top weight baby of that age. He has been exclusively breastfed and is only just being slowly introduced to solids so there is no explanation from his diet.

I understand growth charts, they are created from data on healthy babies, so anywhere on the charts is normally fine for a baby. But I know it's worrying when babies fall off the bottom of the charts, so isn't it equally worrying when they head so far off the top of the charts? 15kg is 99th centile for an 18 month old!

My friend is not worried, but I am. What if he is one of those rare babies with a metabolic or endocrine condition? Any medical professionals out there, would you be worried if you saw a baby so far off the charts?

6 months and 15kg? Are you sure? If so then yes I would be worried.

magicalmrmistofelees · 21/08/2014 19:49

I think at that weight I would be concerned, have you any idea how long the baby is? Might be worth encouraging her to see a HV, even if just for reassurance.

Theyaremysunshine · 21/08/2014 19:57

DD is 16m and 12.5kg. She's a big tall girl, topping 91st centile.

Are you really, really sure he weighs 15kg? Sorry, don't mean to doubt you, just wondering how you've worked out the approx weight.

If he really does weigh 15kg then yes, I'd be concerned (medic), and I'd show my friend the weight charts and ask her to see her HV or GP. Far better to get him properly weighed and length done so he can be monitored at least.

If your friend won't consult medical help there is little you can do though.

I met someone who had a 10kg 4.5 month old and that baby looked really, really enormous. I can't imagine how massive a 15kg 6 month old looks, but it must be obvious to anyone who sees him that something isn't right.

My 4 year old only weighs 15.5kg!

Mumto3dc · 21/08/2014 20:04

Shock 15kg?! My nearly 4 yr old is 12.6kg!
I would definitely encourage yr friend to take him to the health clinic .

divingoffthebalcony · 21/08/2014 20:05

Wow, that is enormous. Scarily enormous.

People will say that you shouldn't worry too much about a fat baby because they will slim down as they enter toddlerhood, which is true, but the immediate problem of being so astonishly overweight at six months shouldn't be ignored, IMHO.

It is an approximate weight as it's done on bathroom scales. But even if he is a kilo or two below that he is still way off the charts. More scary is he could be a kilo or two over that!

He doesn't seem to be an above average baby length/frame wise - I have an 8 month old so I'm around a lot of babies to compare with.

He is the biggest baby I've ever seen. He has no neck to speak of. He is too big for size 5 nappies as the tabs don't stretch around his waist. Comparing him to my friends 10.75kg (and top percentile) 10 month old girl I can well believe that is his approximate weight - she has a defined neck but just very big chubby arms and legs, and still a normal baby waist. This baby looks nothing like that.

I love my friend and I've avoided talking about it with her as I don't want to upset our friendship. But his weight gain is exponential. I really, really hope there is nothing wrong and she of course has done nothing wrong (except not get him weighed as recommended). I think I'm going to try one last time to ask her to come to the HV clinic.

Forgot to say he is in 18-24month clothes - but only soft this. Fitted trousers were apparently too tight.

My DS1 was about 10kg at that age and he was massive and my HV was commenting on him coming off the centiles, he has slimmed down a bit and is about 19kg coming up to 3(more kind of evened out but still a bit bigger) but I think I would be really worried about a baby of that age at the weight you quote.

hollie84 · 21/08/2014 20:14

I think you might have to be clear with her that something isn't right when a 6 month old weighs the same as 3 or 4 year olds and you are very concerned for his health.

Does she go to any children's centre groups? Is she going back to work and using childcare?

What does she do for a car seat? Can he even still be in a harness at that weight?

micah · 21/08/2014 20:14

Sure he's not 15 lbs? Would bake far more sense, unless as others have said he's enormous or the size if a 4 year old...

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 21/08/2014 20:14

Should also mention that my DS1 is also pretty tall.

DeputyPecksBentBeak · 21/08/2014 20:19

This has to be lbs doesn't it? He can't weight that in kilos surely?!

Shock

As someone mentioned up thread, what is she doing about a car seat? The first stage ones only go up to 13kg.

Flisspaps · 21/08/2014 20:24

15kgs is 2 1/4 stone (ish)

If that's what you're saying then I'd first check the scales, then check again. Then suggest she gets the HV to weigh him to check if the scales at home are wrong (even if they're not)

15lbs wouldn't bother me. 15kgs would.

IShallCallYouSquishy · 21/08/2014 20:29

15lbs is actually smaller/average for a 6 month old though? My DS is 6 months, a couple oz shy of 15lb and on the 9th centile. He is in size 3 nappies and clothes for his age.

It must be kg as why would you think a baby of 15lb is overweight?

Fwiw, my DD is 2.3 and is only 11.3kg so can't imagine a 15kg 6 month old Blush

hollie84 · 21/08/2014 20:30

My 5 month old is a chunky 18lbs so this baby is definitely not 15lbs if visibly big.

magicalmrmistofelees · 21/08/2014 20:32

Surely no one would think a 15lb 6 month old was overweight (my DD was about 16lbs at 6 months, 50th centile) so they must be talking kg.

Figster · 21/08/2014 20:36

What reason has she for not having him weighed? I had a 99 centile bloater who at 2.7yo is still 91st weight and 99th height when I look at old photos of him can't believe he was so big but that sounds worrying!!

HavanaSlife · 21/08/2014 20:37

Yes it's very big, ds4 is 14 kg at 18 months and he's not a small child. Ds3 was very big but no where near 15kg at that age.

BikeRunSki · 21/08/2014 20:43

Are you sure you are not getting pounds and kilograms mixed up?

Unless the child is also spectacularly tall - like the height of a 3 or 4 year old - he would have to be almost completely round.

Having said that, dd was in size 5 nappies when she potty trained at 2.3.

LadyMedea · 21/08/2014 20:46

Come on guys I know what a 15lb baby looks like. My DS was about 15lbs at 6 months, he is now 16.5lbs (7.5kg) at 8 months and is 9th centile. I know lots of babies, big ones and small ones of all shapes and sizes.

My friends baby is enormous, this is not a joke.

She doesn't go to any baby groups or children's centres. She is not going back to work so no childcare will have contact. I guess she will be invited to the 9 month check with the HV but that's 3 months away (or 4 as they are massively behind round here).

I told her today that her car seat only goes up to 13kg (she didn't know) and that she needed a 0+/1 which will take her up to 18kg but is still appropriate for a young baby. Her baby fits fine length wise in the infant car seat but is completely squashed in.

bike he is almost spherical

OP posts:
unlucky83 · 21/08/2014 20:47

Did you just stick the baby on the bathroom scales? That low down they probably won't be too accurate. Best to weigh your self and then you holding baby and subtract the difference and see if you still get 15kg...

LadyMedea · 21/08/2014 20:52

He was weighed using that method unlucky. I've done similar with my DS and it was pretty accurate against what the clinic weighed him at.
